O.k so I've got an 87 and I'd like to hear some views on getting the top off and getting it back on by yourself easily. I'm trying to think of something I can build where I can just back my 4Runner up to and hook it up and lift it off the truck, much like a cable pully system. I don't know. Thoughts anyone?

Got a garage? Get some pulleys and some strong 550lb nylon rope. Make it so you can take the top off the body, then slip the nylon rope under it creating a big loop. Pull the top using the pulleys and voila.

I think 4 pulleys and 2 ropes would work the best.

in lue of that, if you have substantial structure in the roof of your garage, you can rig up a system of pullies and such that you can hook straps/ropes to the top and lift it off, drive out from under it, then lower it in the garage. i would not use the garage roof to hold it for any length of time.

LMAO, i tried the pulley thing, but didn't use strong enough rope. Still have 4 pulleys hanging from the ceiling, and a dent in the hood of the 85 from where it landed. It'l work, but don't skimp on the rope or pulleys. Also, I used 1x4's under the top to try and keep the weight distributed a little better, with the rope through a couple holes in each end of each 1x4.

Yeah if I had a garage I probably would have done something like that already but I don't, I have to park it outside. That's why I'm going to have to build something. I was just wondering if anyone had done anything like this before, made their own rig for holding the top. I'm thinking kind of like an engine stand but we'll see. I'll think of something, thanks guys.
