hunting for better mpg

31" tirs drop your mileage a good bit considering the stock tires are supose to be 225/75 from the factory toyota specs..... those tires would have you well in the 20mpgs range.... but they look kinda funny... lol. The knock sensor on most toyotas is either you buy the sensor and splice it in. Kinda like some cheap O2 sensors you buy. But if you buy it from toyota it will come with the knock sensor with the wiring harness attached to it.... so yea. Ya know i didn't even think to ask you if one or both of the wheel were locked in the front of the truck. You lift the truck up and see if the wheel spins free from the axle. Um if the brakes are off when the truck is lifed up. You should be able to spin the tire 360 degrees without any issue.

If the front end is supposed to be smooth and not impact mileage with the hubs locked, then if my truck does have a mileage boost after unlocking them, that would point to some drag in either the axle bearings or front differential. Maybe the transfer case, right?

Proof of concept, preload on front bearings
In fixing my passenger hub, I discovered that the previous owner didn't reassemble the hub correctly.
I also noticed that the outer spindle nut (the 54mm one) had some chisel divets. I know that the previous owner had recently regreased the bearings, but I'm wondering if he might have over-tightened the rotor assembly on.
So, if I took the tire off, shouldn't I be able to test the preload, or would I have to disassemble the hub and take the brake caliper off?
