Is it absolutely necessary that the back two air pipes be mounted to the back of the head? It seems pretty stable connected as is.

Also, there's a bracket that holds several vacuum lines that's between the plenum & the valve cover. Does this bracket need to be mounted with the bolts on the intake?

If its the pipe I think it is, it is you Exhaust Gas Recirculation pipe and hot gases flow through that. You can't leave it off, you'll melt things in your engine bay, it will sound like you have the biggest hole in your exhaust you have ever heard and you'll be carbon monoxide poisoned.

I can't remember what the other carries, coolant maybe?

If you vacuum lines stay in place without the bracket, go for it if you want but I personally would put it back.

It sounds to me as if your rushing this badly or just being really lazy about it. Remember that to replace your engine or any components is going to cost you and that there is a reason Toyota engineers put each part where they did in the first place. It might run without those pipes, but you'll likely wreck something.

I'm sorry, I don't think I explained myself very clearly. I don't want to get rid of these pipes at all. One is called the No. 1 Air Injection Manifold and it wraps around the back of the head to connect the exhaust and intake. Another pipe wraps around the back of the head and behind the fuel filter and connects the intake with something else by the driver's side fire wall (2/3 of this pipe is metal and 1/3 is a large rubber hose---any ideas??) Anyways, both of these pipes have a spot for attachment to the back of the head.

My question is this: as long as those pipes are connected to what they're suppose to, do they really need their attachments to the back of the head? They seem to be sturdy enough without the mounting.

Oh, my apologies, I didn't think anyone mechaniclly capable enough to do a HG would leave them off. I wondered the same thing during my HG job actually. I think you could get by just fine w/o them bolted on to the head (or block, can't remember). That said, I bolted mine back to the head. It wasn't too difficult to get at if you crawled on top of the engine (chest on the valve cover). You have to use a box wrench- its too tight for a socket. Putting them back on took me about 5 min for both.

u put them on the head before u instal it, thats what i did to remove and instal. no problems. one is exhaust, egr. the other is coollant for heater.

Cool, thanks for the info. As for the vacuum lines, they're a series of metal vacuum lines that connect to rubber hoses. It lies between the plenum and the valve cover. I'm not exactly sure how they mount. Anyone have any ideas?

they mount where the intake bolts to head, they use the same fasteners. front bolt and i believe the third one back. just finished putting mine together. good luck.

Well crap, I take it that means that I have to take the intake off again?

So it is mounted in between the intake and the intake gasket? That wouldn't cause leaks?

You want have to take the intake off, only one nut and a bolt to put the air vacuum assy on
