I just got a diesel half cut that is a second generation Surf/Hilux from japan. It is a second generation right hand drive and I noticed that it has push buttons for the different passages you send the heat or AC air through. ie the buttons control inside/outside air, defrost (up top), heat (down low), and combinations just like the non-button typr that have the lever that goes left and right. The temperature hot/cold, and the fan speed levers are that same as any 4-runner. The options of where you want it have the push buttons that seem real cool. I was wondering if this could be implemented into my 4runner. My halfcut came with the original manual (in Japanese) and it clearly shows diagrams of the one I describe and the one we all are familiar with in our american 4runners. I figured since it shows both in the surf manual maybe it is an option and they could be possibly be interchangeable. They both have 7 different positions for air path including inside outside. I wonder if the lever control (4runner) is electrical even though you move a mechanical lever to select the position you want. I figure if anyone ever totally ripped down a dashboard to the guts of the heating/AC system they may have some input. I attached a photo since I probably make no sense!

Just had my 95s dash apart the other day. You can clearly see the MECHANICAL linkages between the HVAC controlls and the functions. Converting to an electrical based system would be a logistical and financial nightmare. It would be cool though.

Well thanks for the replies, when I pull the dash apart on the halfcut I will check out to see how complicated the wiring is for it and the actual mechanism that runs it. You never know, I have all the parts and I know there are some other components that are buried in the dash that I need to bring over to my runner, ie idle up switch, timing belt warning light, turbo indicator, instrument cluster etc....so maybe if I go that far I may go as far as I can. I will tell you though, these vehicles have some pretty cool options that are not offered here in the states!

If you are disassembling the dash anyway you should be able to bring over the whole heater control box and duct assembly anyway. the only thing you might have to do is figure out where to tap into the harness to get power to run the thing. I'd try a switched source that only livens up when the key is on just in case. cheers aviator
