just got it back today and it still wont warm up, the motor seems warm but it stays in cold cycle and idles at 1500 and surges with the brakes on. otherwise seems good. i put a new tstat in before the HG and that didnt change it, the gauge only reads about a 1/4 in town and just above the line on the highway. and ideas?

and it was 600 even for the HG, new plug wires, and injector seals!
thanks again guys

I'll let the gurus chime in on this. vac leak would be my guess with the brakes and idle screw my guess on the idle. not handy with those 2 subjects so let someone else provide some insight.

sounds like the $600 was money well spent.

Check for unplugged sensors, broken vacuum lines, and whatnot.

the overcooling i think is the real issue, causing the surging when the motor is trying to warm up but thinks its already warm, thus idling high and causing a surge when the brakes are applied. if i can get it hot enough to idle under 1200 then i get no surge. i have changed the tstat once but ive read that the oem ones are best and dont use the napa crap ones.
any other help would be great, i have it at the shop again now but i dont know if my mechanic can figure this out.

Have you ever ran stop leak through the radiator or something similar? I had the same issue with this crap plugging up the coolant line that goes to the temp sensor... it always idled high unless I was wheeling\crawling which allowed it to heat up the sensor due to lack of air flow.

Took me awhile to figure that one out.

I wish I had money to just throw into my truck like that. Mine's been parked since January. Finally got some extra cash to order the $64 HG set from Engnbldr yesterday. I would have LOVED to take my truck to a shop and let them deal with all this BS. However, it's a good learning experience (at least that's what I keep telling myself) Glad to hear you have your ride back. But I'm curious... my 22RE idles around 600... sometimes around 400 when it's REALLY hot. 950 sounds high. Or maybe mine is just low... Do you have to turn it off at red lights to save gas?

EDIT: Sorry, for some reason I thought you said 22R... Nonetheless...

I believe factory idle is 850 according to haynes, but mine just smooths out nice around 950. Never noticed a difference in gas, it may even use more idling lower because its not getting enough air and choking. But i would say your idle is low for sure, it might be smoother if u crank her up a bit.

Oh and this fix cost me less than my tires, worth the ease of mind in my book!
