Got a new front pipe from Nashvegas Yota (thanks a lot, sweet deal), a cat and an extender piece from Kragen and bolted it all up again. All in all I had to spend less than $300 to get her up and running again, but it's still a pain. Oh well, hope nobody wants to steal the cheapo Kragen cat at least.

Wow, I guess they are cracking down...that's good. A few years ago I got $140 for my old 93 cat, cash in hand, they had me sign a little slip that I didn't steal it or something. Didn't even ask me for on ID, or address or anything.

its only once every two years. I have a 4runner and have an innerchangeable test pipe and cat. both bolt right up. no one really cares about the exhaust of a 4runner. prior to a few weeks ago, I haven't been pulled over in... nearly a year. ( I got a ticket for not using my blinker a few weeks ago, had my mechanic write and print a receipt that he fixed and replaced one of the bulbs. ) but like I said, no one will "peep" under my 4runner to see if I have a cat. when people ask me what I have on it, and tell them I have a test pipe, they get a surprised look on their face. It really doesn't sound loud unless I full throttle it. it does smell a little 'richer" but nothing a cop would know. lol

Will running without a cat make a significant difference in performance or sound? In the state of Tennessee we have no emissions so I was just curious because I need a new exhaust and my current cat is hollowed out and it sounds like crap.

Perfomance? I dont see why not? sound? definitely. I took out my cat and bolted a test pipe, or a straight pipe instead. and results were a throaty idle, and a huge noticeable difference in the power band. believe it or not, my truck has some serious throttle response. I'm working on fabbing myself an intake, currently. so I'll see what the results are like with that.

I posted in your other thread about your exhaust. I wouldn't get a dynomax, just buy a magnaflow 18" muffler http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MPE-11265/ this muffler is really quiet and adds a nice little low tone. go with 2.25 piping, and a 2.25 to 3" tip pick one you like. you'll be much happier knowing you dont have to replace it again due to rust.

So you choose the hassle of putting the cat back in there every 2 years for what reason?

hassle? 4 14mm bolts is not a hassle. and you know should know that question. my exhaust is still street legal with a cat on. it isn't with the test pipe. slid the pipe in, smog it, get it registered, pull it off, store the cat in my truck, and put the straight pipe back on.

Not getting the exhaust chopped up by some greedy booger with a hacksaw.

if that happend to me i would just follow a police report, and drive around with no cat.. until the insurance fixed it..
i would drive down streets that i never drove down just to give my present to the thief that stole my cat, that i was lurking around... and looking for him....

Or whenever B.I.T., CHP, local sheriff or PD decides to look. Check the laws.
They can check your emissions as you drive by, no need to stop for a sniffer, and can even check your muffler sound / dB level when you drive by. Thank the Harley-Davidson owners for that.

mine got taken in the middle of the afternoon at my school. also used a sawzall made a mess. i just bought a universal one and some pipe and put it back together rather than buy a whole system. i also upgraded to a high flow at the time, made it sound much better.
