Gearing Help Again Please
Hey Guys i have an 87 4runner with 31"s and the factory 4:10. however iam at 2900 rpms at 60 miles per hour on the freeway and shes a total dog going up any incline on the freeway. i thought about 4:88"s but i just realized thats going to bump my rpms at higher speeds. So 4:59"s was the next thought but i dont want to be at 3500rpm doing 60. so any help would be appreciated. I would love to eventually get 32 or 33 onches tires but i dont know thanks again.

First of all, what is all of this concern about RPM's?
I ran my 4.88's with my stock 28.5's for almost a year, and it was fine. I couldn't go 80mph, but 65 was fine. 65 was about 3k. Keep in mind that these 22RE motors are just barely getting into their power band at 3k. I routinely will run mine on the hwy at 3500, and 4-4200 to climb hills. If you plan to go to 33s, get the 4.88's.

if you really want to regear for the 31" tires then you should go with 4.56 gears. Alot of trucks came with them if they have factory 31" tires (and a 5sp)
But if you plan on going to 33" tires in the next year or so, I would just do 4.88's If you don't you will be right back where you started and will have spend all that money to regear again. so.. In my opinion. live with it, OR go with 4.88's

Yeah, the 4.10 is a bit tall for 31's.

By the way, I had an 87 Runner....22RE and auto......I added 571 gears and skinny 33" tires....it would do 2720 rpm at 60 miles per hour.....it was 'zippy' on the highway ....no problem with the inclines. You might want to look closer at your engine....spark plugs, timing, clogged exhaust.

It also depends on what you mean by "a total dog". I mean, it is a four cylinder engine. You're not going to a lot of power under those circumstances, anyway. Atleast, not with a stock engine and drivetrain. Even with 30x9.50's and a stock engine (with a full tune-up) I can't make it up freeway inclines very fast. I get passed quite a bit. In which case, I just take it easy or stay off the freeway altogether.

Factory 4.10 gears - I assumed an 5sp.
I dont think auto's came with 4.10s

Now, that's a good question. If it's automatic, you won't have 4.10's if it's all still factory. In other words, no one swapped the gears out. Then, you should have 4.30's. If it's a manual, then it will be 4.10's. Unless! You have a V6. ????

2900 rpms at 60 miles per hour??? That doesn't really rhyme with anything. With those numbers your speedo thinks you have the normal 225/75 wheels and 4.88 gears (of course assuming MT and V6 engine since those are the numbers I have available).
