So im pretty sure i have an exhaust leak. I changed my spark plugs yesterday and later that night I was kinda driving my truck hard, floored in 4th, didnt shift till 3k but i was kinda driving her hard before that, just accelerating fast and what not.

I only hear this sound ( chc chc chc) when i let out my clutch. If i rev it in neutral i dont hear it. I think its leaking right at the block.

So my question, besides my truck sounding like poop, is there any real problems i should be aware of?

If you only hear it when you let out the clutch then I'd think it has something to do with the clutch and not an exhaust leak.

I might be wrong though.


If it is an exhaust leak then I don't think you'll have any issues as long as you can deal with the noise and not lose your mind.

I dont think it has to do with the clutch because the sound matches the engines rpm.

I heard something about warping your valves or something like that?

Clutch problem. One of the bearings is bad now. You have to think, the clutch is still bolted to the motor so at least part of it is still spining at the exact same RPM's as the motor...

Alright Jay, well i hope its my clutch haha, its already warped as it is. But im still thinking exhaust leak, ill make a video before it gets dark so you can hear the sound.

Well if its between the head and exhaust manifold, its possible to suck a valve if its bad enough. If its before the o2 sensor, its possible to get a lean mixture reading consequently having ECU tell the fuel pump to pump more gas. Then you'll get even crappier gas mileage.
I dont think its an exhaust leak if you cant hear it in neutral.

wait you didn't shift until 3K rpm? LOL...I usually never shifted UNDER 3K...I've popped the O-gaskets between the manifold and down pipe on my 22re revving to 5K for a mile or so

And exhaust leak between one or more exhaust ports and the manifold would be most prominent while accelerating in gear, may be audible at constant throttle / cruise, and go quiet when you let off the throttle. Without a load on the engine, the engine revs up rather fast and combustion pressure is fairly low so you may not get a good chance to hear the noise.
A single port with a minimal leak would sound similar to tapping a pencil tip to a piece of paper or aluminum foil that was hanging in the air (don't know if you can imagine it but if you hold up a piece of paper or foil so you're holding one edge and the paper / foil is vertical then tap on it with a pencil tip, you might get what I'm explaining). More serious leaks will sound similar to plastic wrap flapping in the wind at high speed.

Can you be a little more descriptive about what you have to do to cause the noise?

I've driven 5 miles @ 60 mph in 3rd before and didn't blow a gasket. Though afterwards the gerbils were severly dehydrated had singed hair.

Yea i never shift (normally) above 3, but going on the highway 70mph = 3k. Im just easy on her cause i dont want that HG to go pop.

To get the sound, it just happens when im in gear and im hitting the gas, only under load.

Ill take my foot off the gas in gear and i wont hear the sound, doesnt matter what the engine is at.

yes..yes..I've done more high rev for a few miles, too. But when I blew the gaskets I basically didnt have gaskets. What I had in there were the remnants of previous gaskets wrapped in tin foil. It worked until I revved it to 5K chasing a Mirage........

I have a similar tch tch tch sound from a bad donut gasket coming off my threeveezy where the exhaust connects to the manifold.

I vote bad donut gasket as well, mine is bad right now as well

Will live with it till I do my bodylift just cause it's a pain in the stock location

I know I've got an exhaust leak at the manifold from my inspection. How do I go about fixing this? I'm guessing this is the same problem...

Depends on where.
If its a crack in the manifold, new manifold

Leak at the doughnut gasket right at the end of the manifold, new gasket

Leak at the block, new gasket there.

working on the exhaust manifolds are a pain, thats why im gonna throw on a 1'' body lift before trying to fix it. But for right now, im leaving it alone.

hijack - same topic, different engine and leak location...what do you guys do about a crack in the exhaust (22re) right AFTER where the doughnut gasket is at (toward the cat)? replace the pipe or attempt welding? i've been trying to find my exhaust leak for a few months and had ruled out the manifold and gasket. replaced the two doughnuts thinking it was there as that's pretty common leak area, but it didn't fix it. was under the truck last week and for some reason looked up at the exhaust from a funky angle and found a crack on the engine-side where the "Y" is at a couple inches past the doughnuts. don't know if its such a good idea to try and weld that as i'm thinking the pipe might be brittle from being so close to the header, and being 16 yrs old.
