Also it kind of a long shoot but maybe the timming is off real bad??

Mark it where it is at now then move it either way a little and see if it cranks if nothing on either way then set back to where you marked it.

I don`t know anything about the 3.0, but let me throw this out there and see if it helps. When i first got my 86 4Runner it ran good for a day or two, then the next day it wouldn`t start, like you i checked everything and nothing, if i sprayed starting fluid into the intake it would try and start, but that was it. At this point i was ready to try anything, so just for the heck of it i replaced the solenoid resistor (i had a spare) and it started up on the first try, so see if your truck has a solenoid resistor and if it does it might be bad. The solenoid resistor is part of the electrical system for the injectors, at least it is on my 4Runner.

About the engine light......I have never seen it on. Like you, I would think that this would trigger some kind of error that I could read with the computer. I do have a little bit of an update though....

I've done some searching on here and figured out that the ECU is not getting a signal from the igniter. Apparently the ECU won't open the fuel injecters until it recieves a signal from the igniter. The reason the engine acts like it is going to start when i first turn it over is beause the ECU is sending a signal to the cold start injecter and releasing fuel for about 2 seconds. During that 2 seconds the ECU is searching for a signal from the igniter. If it does not get anything it stops sending fuel to the engine.

The real kicker is when i opened pulled some of the interior panels loose to try and track down the wire from the igniter to the ECU, I found a bunch of f'd up electrical patching and chopping. It's really bad. So in other words, I have a lot of work ahead of me in order to find out what is wrong with this truck. The worst part is.....I HATE electrical stuff.

What I am going to do first is run a jumper from the igniter to the ECU, once I figure out where it is supposed to connect.

make sure you have your electrical fuel system wires grounded to the engine..

(like on the 22re engines if you disconnect the ground wire on the intake the engine will start for a about 2 seconds and die, but it will only stay runningg if you stay in the gas...)

put the ground wire back on ans truck starts and idles like nothing happend..

Start with all your basic stuff and it should all fall together and start...

Have you tried a blast of starting fluid into the intake to see if it will fire off of that?

If its going to fire off fuel into the intake,Then I would use a can of starting fluid to see if I could get up to idle. Youve cheked the cam timing?

If the timing is off bad when you try to crank it every few seconds it will kind of "burp" i guess you caould say and give the apperence of trying to crank!!!

I got it started!!! Thanks everyone. THe problem ended up being a pos security system one of the previous owners installed. He put a kill switch under the steering column that had a bad connection. I took out all of his pirate wiring and connected the wires back that he had cut or patched into and the thing started right up.

I do have a pretty good oil leak on the front of the engine, but the thing runs. That's all that matters!!!

Thanks for all the tips. You guys lead me down the path to figuring it out.

1990yota- How do I tell the difference between the front oil main and the head gasket? I took the timing belt cover off and I can see oil dripping from the bottom of the head onto the top of the block on the passenger side. There is no oil leaks at all on the driver side of the engine. I assume that is a head gasket leak, but do you think that it could be a front main oil seal?

will is the engine spraying oil from your front main seal up on the engine.

more than likely the front cover is leaking up by the head gasket.

its always best to take pictures and post them so everyone can see what your talking about...

you and also get the uv dye that you put in the oil to find where the oil is coming from with a uv light

there is a lip on the back of your harmonic balancer which is the main crankshaft pulley

that lip on the backside is called oil slinger, and sling oil is what it does, if you are dripping oil while the engine is just setting there.. its best you change the seal out too.

if you have ovr 100k miles on you engine you probley should change it out before it blows its load...

mine has been doing the exact same thing bu its my daily driver. i searched and searched for the problem for days. I finally decided to take it into the shop. They still arent 100% sure but think my ECM may be bad.they been trying to diagnose it for about 3 days. You might look in the fsm and see if it tells a way to check the ECM. my bad i skipped to the end and didnt see you got it started.
