Drop hitch did its job!!

Big runner:1
Ford Focus: 0

this happened a couple weeks ago, but i've been waiting for the insurance to clear everything before posting anything... i ended up getting a 700 check from her insurance company as a result. i was able to move the trailer hitch back into spot using a chain and a tree in my driveway and replaced the drop hitch for 50 bucks.... now its time to buy some new bumpers!

i purposely leave the drop hitch installed to prevent small cars from going under in the event of a rear end crash.. it did its job perfectly!

Wow, just wow. I wouldn't trust that hitch any longer to tow anything with though.

once i moved it back up, all 4 bolts where sorta loose.. i tighten them all down and it appears to be good to go now... i haven't tried towing anything yet but i dont see why it would have an issue.

It got bent, especially the brackets, it and the brackets could be cracked and/or fatigued and/or have micro-fractures. It'll probably hold up but don't be surprised if one day it falls apart. I'd replace it for the peace of mind.

That is amazing how little damage you have. If you lived in PA you'd get harassed by cops about the no bumper thing...

Red face

How did you manage to hit the car so hard??

Like Swimmer Boy said here in Pa it would be you or your insurance Company being found at fault.

So many bumpers to build and no time

Wow! I've seen that before but it's usually just a punctured radiator, goodness her car is a mess. Hope everyone was ok after that incident. Maybe I should put one on mine with a little skull instead of a ball....

I thought the "job" of a receiver hitch was to attach a towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.

Hmmpf- You learn something new every day!

JK- Glad your rig is ok.

That and a cop with a bad attitude could put you at fault for driving around with a receiver in and no trailer, specially a drop one of that size (local traffic nazi was telling me about it being a secondary offence that can be ticketed as an after the fact offence if pulled over during a traffic violation, but about as enforced as stuff hanging from a rearview mirror)
