DOH! My head hurts! Pics!
Okay, started a head gasket job. Took pretty much everything off and drained the oil
2 1/2 gallons of this crap
Not too bad I thought...until I found this.....
Which belongs here....
So, what should I do? Should I go ahead and replace the whole head and cam?
There wasn't anything on the pistons and the walls look fine...here are pics...
Cylinder 1
Cylinder 2
Cylinder 3
Cylinder 4

To be completely honest...you're probably better off going to a junk yard and finding a new engine. When pieces start breaking off like that you don't know how many fragments found their way through the oil passages.
If you're dead set on keeping the block, tear it down completely; get it measured, decked, and honed; have all the rods and pistons checked; and replace that head and cam.
Its gonna cost a lot to be sure the rebuild will last, which is why I say find a new engine.

I wouldn't say those cylinder walls look FINE j(they're scored pretty good), but they are repairable. Depends on how much you can find a good used engine for....

I'll take a Grande Mocha Frappuccino. Sorry for your loss.
Ditto on the cylinder walls, but that head looks like a door stop.
I'd say start looking for complete used motor.

i would say that looks/looked better than mine...
when i got my 4runner the cylinders had rust everywhere, the cam had grooves and scoring, milky crap was everywhere -> clogged up the heater core, too!
since i can't wrench it cost me some coin - cha-ching!
everything is good now and i'll be tackling the heater core in aug... wish me luck!
and good luck to you.

So, do you think those are really scratches? To me, that looks pretty normal. I really don't see anything down inside the cylinders at all.
I thought this truck was only going to cost me $400 total including the head gasket job...not $1400!!! lol.
