Doing my own clutch job on my 86 4runner. I'm just finishing up a few hours under the truck. Following Alex Man video of his 88 (slight difference on a few things), so for the front drive shaft - does any one have tips on removal? I stopped tonight there, with the sway bar still intact, but maybe remove to get to the front 4 bolts. So my question to anyone who has done this. Before I go at again tomorrow are there any wrench/socket specific pieces that make the job go easier. I rented a transmission jack, and will go have the flywheel resurfaced tomorrow after I get to it.

I'm borrowing some others tools, but have started to build my own travel kit. Looking for good pieces to add. Any suggestions welcomed.

Drop the sway bar down. It'll make it easier for putting the Trans back up since the bell housing and the driveshaft may get caught up by it depending on your plan of attsck putting it back up.

Aside from the basic tools. An impact makes things easier and some long extensions.

I've figured out what the best tools are. Buying from Ebay the ultimate 4runner kit.

The 4 bolts that hold the sway bar in can be rusted and break off in some cases. I soak them in PB Blaster and gently work them out. They may come half way out and then bind up. That is where I add more PB Blaster and thread them back in and just keep working them in and out until they come completely out.

When I install a transmission, I like to use some large phillip screw drivers as guide dowels. The screw drivers are long and nearly as thick as the bolts and when I have the transmission about 3-4inches I run them thru the bolt holes from the engine to the transmission.

You have two bolts at the top of the transmission, from the rear it would be the 11 and 2 o clock position. There I use about 3-4 foot socket extensions to install and remove them with a swivel on the end.

My last transmission job I did I was able to buy a new flywheel for $55. It was $20 something dollars to have it resurfaced. I got mine at Oriellys.

I"m stuck on the flywheel removal. I tried last night to break with 1/2" bar- no go. Looking at renting or buying an impact wrench today. Any input?

Some used snap on stuff locally. Considering. I'm considering the 10 and 60 degree offset closed end wrenches in specific sizes. Looking on ebay for 14/17, etc..

Those flywheel bolts can be a pain. I used a foot and half breaker bar to get em loose. I would say liquid wrench and add a pipe on the end of the breaker bar....they'll come out.

In my case my impact wasn't strong enough to get them out.

My impact wont always break them either. Breaker bar and cheater pipe will get them. They are stuck in there at times.
