Checking for codes

After this seafoam i'm doing i'm gonna change spark plugs and i wanna check for codes.. I have never done this on any car or truck.. I understand how to use the paper clip but which ones do i stick it in? I'm not the brightest person when comes to anything electrical , can someone break the procedure down into redneck terms for me?

I couldn't explain it any better than the FSM. Basically, your going to short 2 connectors(TE & E) with a wire(paperclip, etc.) and observe a series of flashes of the "check engine" light. Then refer to the list of trouble codes to find which code that number is. You'll figure it out.

Example: flash flash(pause)flash=21, flash(pause)flash flash flash flash=14
You can have many codes consecutively, so it might be confusing at first to seperate one from another, but the series will loop continously untill either unshorting the connectors or clearing the system memory of stored codes(described in the FSM).

There should be a diagnostic box on your engine fuse box. You open the little box and if you are on the pass. fender you plug the middle and top left corner with the clip ON the first set of six connectors.

mudhippy - Do you have the entire FSM in pdf format? I have a 95 4Runner and would love to get all the chapters if possible.

Thanks,
