the least expensive converter I could find legal for install in California, 218 installed.
so ask your auto parts store if the converter has the EOD stamped into the body and can be read from 5 meters away as per California law. and ask how to record the number and the installer's information.
and if you have issues, call the California Bureau of Automotive Repair http://www.bar.ca.gov/

And how about if I do a test only on my isuzu and if it fails. I have my brother weld the new cat on.

have to have a test demonstrating you need a converter.
have to have a shop install a converter, either OEM or having an EO# for your truck....
and oh, your brother has to lie about installing the converter on your truck.

sorry. I'm one of the first to screw the man but when they have checks, double checks and certifications required to fix the checks it's a little difficult to find someone to take the axe if... no "when"... it falls apart.

If anyone asks, this is how you received the vehicle.
DO NOT acknowledge you knew anything could be wrong with the vehicle- do not volunteer any knowledge that may suggest you knew it would have an issue, either before the test or after.
Let them tell you what it will take to make it legal.
Deal with the converter issue when you have to.
Do not tell anyone you had the converter removed or that you know who removed it.
If anyone asks, this is how you received the vehicle.

Are these laws new and when do they take effect , there is guys buying converters on craigslist , I had a guy call me to buy my converter on the 4runner I am parting out.So the converters the parts stores are selling are not going to be legal anymore.

Oh, and pulling the EFI fuse right before you go down for the test may help you- just don't turn the engine off after pulling the fuse and restarting the engine.

New aftermarket converters have to meet requirements such as having EO# stamped into the body and have to be certified for the vehicle they are being installed. No more saying that the converter works on a 454 Chevy so it will be more than adaquate for a 2.4L Toyota 22RE. It MUST be tested on the vehicle it is being installed on and have the exemption order (EO) to prove it.

as much as I hate the laws here... if they would've been in place 4 years ago, I doubt someone would've stolen the converter off my 4Runner causing the first 240 dollars to replace it... 240 wasted dollars I might add because I just had to replace that converter to pass my recent emissions test... so net out of pocket was about 440.

The converter on my 1994 4runner was stolen also about 3 months ago , I just put one on from kragen .Those thiefs stole 6 converters from my street the same night all from toyotas.Oh I replaced it myself.

Same here. About a year ago my cat was stolen from my truck while I was at work. I installed the new cat myself. It has since passed a "test only" smog
A couple months later (early 2008) my ex girlfriend had her cat stolen from her 4runner while she was at work. Took it to a shop and they installed a new one (same one as mine) welded on for 160 cash.
