Burnt valve

Can anyone give me an explanation for what it means when someone says an engine has a burnt valve?

Also, what are the symptoms?

Thanks,

Michael

basically its when part of the valve got so hot that it broke off, symptoms would include rough running, missing, High HCs comming from the exhaust, back firing, ETC

A burnt valve means enough material on the valve has been destroyed to affect compression.

This would be around the edges where the valve is thinnest.
