Here's a pic of the area where I dragged the bolt out of. The bolt actually came out a lot easier than I had initially thought it would. But then, I've been soaking it in WD-40 and other lubricants for a while, too. I pulled the bolt out and nothing came out.......just a little oil goooz was in there.

Was this the right bolt to remove? I used a 17mm socket to get it out. Thoughts? Maybe my system has enough radiator fluid (I have removed the lower radiator hose and drained that, but didn't remove the thermostat) to attempt replacing the cam now?

That's the right one. If nothing came out then you either have no coolant in the block or a wall of scale has formed behind the plug. Poke it with a screwdriver.

I poked around in there and nothing came out. Would removing the lower radiator hose get this out as well?

I think the lower hose is about the same level as (or slightly above) that hole, so probably nothing more is going to come out from the block. The radiator is another story.

I took mine out after taking out the hoses, liquid came out. I had to poke mine before it did. Maybe our trucks are sitting on different hills?

you would be suprised. also keep in mind that on all toyota 4x4s, the lower hose attaches to a pipe, which goes up and attaches to a 90* elbow hose that goes on the neck of the timing cover. that part of the timing cover is above the lowest part of the block, so there's always coolant remaining unless you pull the block drain plug.
