Alternators for 22R-E

I've finally found some time to do a little work on my '88 4runner. I've been hearing a squealing sound since I bought the truck, and I thought I was going to need to adjust a tensioner or something, but it's not that. It looks like the alternator juts out past where it should, putting the belt in a bind. I found a receipt from the previous owner, and the alternator is only 4 months old (Pep Boys reman and install) Anyway, are there different types of alternators for the 22R? It looks like this used all of the factory mounting points. Is there anything else I can do with it, or should I just get another alternator? Thanks

It may not be installed quite right. There are several brackets in there and they may have put them back a little off. See if you can find another one to look at and compare it to. I would also consider bringing it back to Pep Boys and see what they say.

Personally, I don't like Pep Boys or any of the big chain shops for that matter. They seem to hire a lot of young, inexperienced help at those places, at least in my experiences with them.

The way that the alternator mounts is with a bolt on the botom this bolt holds the alternator in place and allows the to of the alternator to pivot left and right. The top bolt allows for tension to be adjusted. The top bolt goes through a bracket that allow the alternator to only move left and right, the further left the alternator goes the less tension is put on the belt and vise versa for the right.

I really don't know how it could be put on wrong..?? Could it be adjusted too tight?

I agree about chain auto repair mechanics. I had an incident with one who turned up on a murder rap a few days later.

Is'nt there a shim or washer in the bottom mounting assembly? It is between the bracket and the alternator mounting lug, I can't remember if it is front or rear lug. The installer may have left it out. If it is missing, the belt could be misaligned.

Weird I also don't see how it could be installed wrong. You bolt it in and it's either too tight, too loose, or alright. When I first put my belt back on after changing my alternator I had the belt too loose and it squealed like a pig. Once I used a crowbar to put some tension on it while I tightened the bolt the squeal went away.

as far as i know, there are at least 2 different styles of alternators for the 22R and R-E

and the R and RE are different

i had to switch mounts doing my EFI conversion.
