'90 Pickup Hard Warm Start 22R

Alright, another hard to start truck thread. Cue eye rolling. I've searched a *ton* on here but can't find a definitive solution to my problem so forgive me.

My P/U is a '90 22R purchased some weeks ago and it ran well for a 25 year old truck. Changed all the fluids, oil, plugs, etc and has had no issues starting. Now, all of a sudden, I'm having trouble starting it after its warmed up (cold is fine). I have to give it gas while starting or she'll die immediately, and I usually help it idle for about 30 sec as well.

The interesting bit is that the other day I was on a long drive and stopped for something and parked it on a slight incline, maybe 10 degrees or so. Came back after 15 mins to start and nothing. Wouldn't crank at all, just a click (all lights came on/radio etc). So I got out and poked around in the engine compartment to see if something had blown up and when I came back it started right up (had to give it gas). Not sure if that was a fluke or somehow related.

Ideas? Anyone had a similar issue and actually fixed it?

Alright so I've narrowed this down to a choke issue. On a stone cold start with one pump of the gas the butterfly valves are nearly shut in their, what I'm assuming from Google, standard position. However, after warming up to operating temp only one of them opens up- the other remains closed. Tried to wiggle it and no dice.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

This is normal.

The choke plate is only on the primary barrel. The secondary barrel & plate (closest to the valve cover) serves as a variable venturi. It needs to be closed, or nearly closed, to generate vacuum to draw out fuel in the secondary circuit.


What is common on the Aisan 22R carburetors is that fuel will drain out of the float bowl which causes a hard re-start. What you'll need to do is the next time you restart the engine, open up the hood, and check the fuel level in the float bowl via the sight glass. The fuel should be in the middle. You may need to wiggle the truck around so the fuel sloshes in the bowl, to see it.
