There's a way to tell from your door plate - there are codes on there to tell you what it came with. I don't know how to decode it - do a search.

I would guess they're not stock - I think (don't know for sure) that 4.88s were only with auto trannies. The thing is, if it came with 4.88s it can't be regeared - dunno why - but if it has been previously regeared TO 4.88 you can regear it again to whatever.

Factory 4.88 gears have a different pinion offset then all the other ratios. No aftermarket gears (nor any factory gears except other 4.88's) will fit.

As far as driving with no rear, you can pull the driveshaft if the gears aren't thrashed. If they are, you can pull the third out, remove the ring gear and reinstall the third, leaving the pinion in place to plug the hole up front. You cannot do this if the pinions and/or spider gears are damaged. I did this for about 6 months of only periodic driving but it held up. Perhaps more hassle than it's worth for a short-term fix though.

MKK sorry i have been away for a wile. they are 4:88s not stock. but i am having a hell of a time finding them. would i be able to put 4:88s from a 94 runner with an auto tranny and that whole ABS crap in my 89 pickup 5speed 3.0. i think the runner is a 3.0 but if it isent would it work for me eneyway?
