3vze starting and running issue

Ok so I picked up an 88 truck that hand been ran for along time in probably 10 years or so. The guy I bought it from said the fuel pump was bad and thats all it needed. He also told me every now and then he would spray gas in the engine just to run it for a lil bit. So I went ahead with it and bought thinking it wouldnt be no problem.

I replaced the fuel filter and fuel pump (it didnt even have a pump to start with) and out bout 5 gallons of gas in the tank and some injector clean. Went to start it up and it was struggling so I could tell something was wrong. I checked and the fuel filter wasnt tightened all the way so I got it all go. Went back to start it and I could hear it wanting to start so I gave it some gas and it started for a few and died out.

So I waited a little bit tried again and same thing but this time it made a weird noise when it stop. I tried it again and this time it just sounded weird didnt sound the same way it had been sounding it and it wouldnt come close to starting at all.

My dads friend came over and said he was positive that I broke the timing belt well I just got done taking that all apart to find out that the timing belt was there and in one piece but damn there were alot of dirt dobber nest in there

So my question what could cause it to run for a lil but but just die out and not want to start up again.

O on a side note my dad told me this was a problem since I have never owned a manual vehicle before. He says I should have to hold the clutch down to get it start but when I do that I get nothing out of the truck. But there is a clutch start cancel button and if i press that and it turns on then I try to start it and the trucks wants to turn over.

Wow; I hope you didn't pay too much for it.

First things first; pull the computer codes.

Ok I looked and this is what it showed for a code 51
SWITCH SIGNALSIDL (tps) CONTACTS OFF, NEUTRAL START SWITCH OFF, A/C SWITCH "ON" SIGNAL TO ECU
WITH DIAGNOSTIC CHECK CONNECTOR SHORTED
--A/C SWITCH/CIRCUIT
--A/C AMPLIFIER
--TPS/CIRCUIT
--NEUTRAL START SWITCH/CIRCUIT
--EC

So can any one explain this to me what I should be doing? Sorry im such a newb just trying to learn
