One thing I can tell you is that your gas mileage should improve. I owned a 93 pickup with the V6 and it got worse mileage than the 96 T-100 with the 3.4.

I have swapped truck.
Fixing a blown head gasket is cheap and easy. It will not bolt to your auto, you ought to get the whole drivetrain with engine/tranny. It is not cheap, easy or cheap. I got 20 mpg with 33's and 5.29's on the highway. Do this if you can do it yourself and plan to keep the truck forever.

If you have an auto, you will need to mod it or swap in a manual tranny (like me). You can also get the 3.4 tranny but that will require a different xfer case and adapter for 4x4.
Gas mileage will improve. Bolt up swap but you will need 3.4 accesories like ps pump, vsv's, charcoal canister etc. Do a search for the swap and you should get some links. This is my 1st ever swap and I have put almost 10k on it with no problems.

No one has actually seen one of these modified autos in person AFAIK.
I took calls all day on how to make it work. The internals are fundamentally different in size, function and number. Why not use the tranny that comes behind the 3.4? You know, the one made for the 3.4? If you get that far in and think keeping things "stock" is a better idea than using a tranny for the engine, you are nuts. Marlin sells an adaptor to get a gear drive case behind that tranny. I have owned three of them. Only in the last 3 months have I finally gotten one that is not supposed to leak. Dual cases are easier, you don't have to eliminate the park solenoid. If you have a 5spd truck and skills, do it in the driveway quick and easy. If you have an auto, swap engine/tranny, swap to 5 spd, fix or sell that SOB, placed in order of cost.

Alright...found a donor 1997 4runner: 1200 for the engine( 100,xxx miles)
500 for the tranny(automatic) and ecu. however the chevy dealership i work at can get me a motor from a 1998 with 45,xxx miles for the same price. would i have a problem using the 98 3.4l with the 97 ecu and tranny? does 1700 for all of that seem reasonable?

Thanks Dale.
I have not driven my truck in the better part of 7 months, so the new adaptor is on the shelf. Looks like it ought to work, but I do not have mine in.

The article I wrote on performing a 3.0 to 3.4 swap will be publishing in two installments in Off-Road Magazine, I believe in the June and July 2006 issues which should hit newsstands fairly soon. There will be lots of pictures and detailed tech. The truck I did was a 5-speed already so that made it easier but as far as the rest of the swap EVERYTHING is covered in detail including the battery relocation, charcoal canister, air filter, cruise control and even the tachometer fix. Once the magazine article publishes we will republish on the TLT website with large color images and even greater detail.
It's a fairly simple swap but like Adrian said, only go for it if you plan to DIY and keep the truck for a loooong time. Also if you are anything less than a wiring genius pay the money for a custom ORS wiring harness, it will save you countless headaches! |

Static, the tranny swap wasn't hard at all. i used the 3.0 tranny cause it bolted right up and I did all of the 3.4 wiring myself. I also used the 3.4 charcoal canister cause I couldn't figure how to hook up the 3.0 canister correctly.
