22RTE failed smog high nox
i have a 1986 22rte 5 speed manual 4x4, ive been recently tuning it up and tried to smog it in order to transfer title.
here are the test results
15mph: NO(ppm) max-795 Measured-1092 FAIL
25mph: NO(ppm) Max-855 Measured-674 PASS
HC's and CO were both well under the average measured numbers
Here is a list of the tuneup/mods:
Denso platinum spark plugs
MSD ignition wires
Cap and Rotor (copper not aluminum)
Denso O2 sensor
fuel filter
K&n air filter
Rotella 5w40 synthetic
2 1/2" exhaust down pipe all the way back no muffler
new magnaflow cat
sea foam intake cleaner
x2 gumout injector cleaner
31" tires
electric fan
timing is set to 7 BTDC
only thing i can think of is triple check for vacuum leak, and retard the timing to 3 degrees
any thoughts?, thanks

From what I have seen on the High Nox fails, I seem to recall it is alot to do with EGR. If you want to go thru Chefyota4x4's thread starting somewhere from page 200 and on up. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f199.../index201.html He had to go thru the same thing and found several other fixes. Seems like his header was part of the problem as well but could be wrong.

are they the original injectors? how many miles on them?
in 4-stroke combustion you have fuel, air, spark and compression. the hardest one to get an accurate measurement on are the fuel injectors.
i have some reman upgrade injectors available if you are interested.

I found one small vacuum leak on the vsv for the AC idle up, cleaned the egr elbow with a new gasket. retarded the timing to 4*BTDC, and re torqued all the exhaust/turbo gaskets. I passed!
Thanks Terry for the link, alot of reading but it helped a lot.

I was going to point you to page EG1-13 of the FSM, but apparently the diagnostics only apply to HC and CO emissions? I don't know enough about emissions obviously, but that page may give you another giant page of diagnostics to run though.
Derp, and then noticed you solved it haha. Posting too late at night, bah.
