Try loosening or removing the valve cover and see if the noise stops. If the valve cover it to tight the rocker arms can hit the valve cover. That noise doesn`t sound like a rod knock to me.

If it was louder when you first crank it, then it most likely is a rod knock. This is because the motor tends to have low oil pressure when you first crank it and it will amplify a rod knock.
My truck had the same thing when I bought it due to the fact the PO had a timing chain wear through and then left the old guides in the oil pan.
One thing I forgot to ask, how is the oil pressure? The stock guage usually isn't accurate, but on my truck before I replaced my rod bearings it would barely make it to the 1/4 mark. Then I replaced my rod bearings and cleaned out the pan and it makes it to the 3/4 mark now.
If you want to, you can replace the rod bearings. On my motor I jacked up the motor from the bell housing and took of the motor mounts so that it would clear the differential when I took out the pan. If you go this route, you're going to need to get all the rod caps off, and see what letter they are. Call toyota and tell them what letter bearings you need and it should cost roughly $100 for bearings and fpg sealant.
Good luck and I hope this helps.

Sounds like a combination of bad rockers, and cam, maybe a bent valve to me but I am not a pro. Does it resonate away at about 3000rpms?
Like I said do a compression test, and a leak down test post what those numbers are. And then lets go from there.
Then you could also start to pull the head and oil pan. You are going to have to do it anyway. That way you get a good look at the cam and rockers.
If the cam and rockers are bad, order a cam, rockers, timing chain kit, oil pump, water pump, and gasket kit from Ted at Enbldr. Send your head to a machine shop for the valves, springs, guides, etc to be checked lapped, cleaned and reassembled. All that should come in under $600.00. And clean it all and reassemble. I would order the head gasket from the dealer.
Like I said before, you need the FSM. Go ahead and download it. Follow it.
If you pull the head and the cam, and all is well then you know it is the bottom end and you need a new engine. I have heard real good things about Oregon engine rebuilders. Life time warranted from them also.

Hmm, mine has a faint knock from around 2000 to 24-2500 rpm but only when you let off the gas it makes a *BLET* sound, almost like when a starter engages when the engine is already on. Also happens when it first fires up but then it goes away in a second or two. I guess she could use a rebuild but I'm hoping it will last me another 50,000 km or so. Mine runs great as well.

Hey, my 89 is making the same noise....... I was wondering if you ever found out what the issue was? When I listened to mine I thought it was the lifter/rocker arms/ valves knocking together, does anyone know what the gap is supposed to be between the valves and rocker arms?

I still haven't found out what is wrong with mine. Money has Been too tight to do anything.
Still been looking for either another motor for cheap. Or a 1uz to swap in. Either way it still hasn't happened. Still questioning myself as what I want to do. Hard to make up my mind.
