1991 Pickup help

Hi, hope someone here can help. I recently purchased a 1991 Pickup with the fuel injected 4 cyl. that had not been started in over a year. I put a new battery in, checked the fluids, changed the coil due to corrosion and have drained the old gas out and put in fresh. The truck will start with ether if I hold the flap on the airflow meter open and will idol as long as it held open, but dies if I let it close or try to throttle up. I just put the fresh gas in today, and was hoping that might be the problem but it acted a little different, this time it idoled fine for a while then slowly began idoling down until it died. Any ideas as to what the problem may be? Someone on another forum suggested fuel pump or filter. I can hear the circuit opening relay click but can't actually hear the pump running(and don't know if should be able to). The fuel filter is cheap but looks like it will be a pain to change. Any help/ advice would be greatly apreciated. Thanks

have you checked to see if you are getting fuel to the fuel rail.

I assumed it was since it would idle, but not sure. Whats the easiest way to check? Also, I left out one detail about the last time I started it, I could actually throttle up a few times before it would stall, then it started the whole idleing down until it died. Thanks
