I know this is probably irrelevent, but is there any way to reduce the sewing machine sound on my 84 22r? is it a matter of valve adjustment? if so does someone have a good link to the proper method to do it?

I'd say its a combination of several sounds: loose valves, too tight of a valve cover fit, broken timing chain guides, and leaky exhaust manifold lines.

There's nothing special to adjusting the valves. Run the motor to operating temp, pull the cover off as fast as you can, and follow the instructions in your repair manual. Or use my "FSM" link in my signature and download the factory service manual for your truck! 1984 might not be available, so just refer to 1985 model year.

These valve covers were molded so constrictively around the rocker arms that over-torquing the fastening nuts will cause interference between cover and rocker.

To this day I've never seen a 22R without an exhaust leak. Those hard lines that bolt to the top suck a big one.

Timing guides? Made of plastic! Listen for a loose timing chain.

Come look at my '95 No exhaust leaks and doesnt leak or burn any fluids My other two...well different story



...and yeah the 22r is just a loud engine

i had figured that it was kinda just the way it was going to be, it really isn't an issue, except when i am at the drive through window. other than that i really don't mind it. i remember even when they were new they sounded that way.

Haha. I love going through drive-throughs, and like against buldings or the median between the lanes on the freeway. I love being able to hear my ticking, clattering, intake whooshing (ISR'ed 22re) and my annoying raspy exhaust
