Knock sensor code 12
After checking the codes on my 85 4runner, I ran into code 10, and 12. I usually figure these things out on my own. But the Toyota 22re is a new adventure for me. I did some research got the Pdf FSM. Found that it is the Knock sensor for code 12, found location of knock sensor thanks to 4crawlers website. But i have no such knock sensor, just a empty hole and a lone yellow plug. This has me puzzled, why would the ECU pick up a knock from a sensor that is not there that there is detonation?
Also if anyone has any help for me regarding code 10, that would be nice. I have no clue what the STA signal is, but I'm guessing it is the starter signal.
Thank you for your time.

If the ECU is expecting to recieve a signal from the knock sensor and it doesn't, then it interprets that lack of signal as a problem with the knock sensor circuit. The ECU is not "picking up a knock". The problem is it's not "picking up" anything. It knows what to do when the knock sensor detects knocking, and/or no knocking. But it doesn't know what to do when it can't detect a working knock sensor, when there should be one. Make sense?
From page FI-25(PDF page# 194) of the 85 FSM regarding code 10...
Code: 10
System: Starter signal
Diagnosis: No STA(Starter Switch) signal to ECU when vehicle speed 0 km/h and engine is running over 800 rpm
Trouble area:
1. Speed sensor circuit
2. Main relay circuit(Page FI-64)
3. IG switch circuit(Starter[Terminal 50], page FI-35)
4. IG switch(Ignition Switch[AM-ST] and/or Neutral Start Switch[IG-STA])
5. ECU(Page FI-72)
Trees are pretty cool aren't they?

Thanks for the info, I figured that as far as not getting the signal the day after I posted, kinda had a brain fart there.
Now my next question is will this cause my ECU to make a timing adjustment because of lack of signal. Because the truck makes this slit amount of change when I accelerate quickly and the as soon as the engine light comes on it make a, what should I call it, like a studder, or a jump almost like I would guess the timing slightly change its hard to explain. It definitely isn't normal.
As far as the engine code 10. I think I have an explanation for that, when I got the truck, The plug connector clip for the start was broke, I got tired of it falling out and installed a dead man switch. No starter signal, but the thing is the same code was there before I installed the switch.
I figure that's enough for someone to answer
and yes MudHippy trees are awesome. Your the first to notice or even comprehend the name.
