help me decide on lockers
im looking into inexpensive lockers for my 85 4runner, it is a daily driver so i don't want to spool it. the two contenders right now are the "aussie locker" or the "lock right locker" i can find both brands for about $250 each. does anyone have two cents to put in????
or even better, any other suggestions (oh, and i dont want to weld it either)
plan on changing gears as well, going to run BFG A/T 33x9.50x15 so im leaning towards the mild 4.88's but friends are pushing me to 5.29's, any suggestions????

I am running aussies front and rear. Do you DD this thing during the winter and need 4WD-like to Mt. Hood etc? If so I would recommend that you not put a front locker unless you can do a selectable locker. A locked front end likes to pull where it wants to go...not good on an icy street. Open front end on a DD is much more friendly than locked...after a weekend of wheeling up at TSF my arms are dead after fighting the front end...
You say you are going 33's...any chance you are gonna go higher down the road, say 35's? If so on buy your gears once and go for 5.29's...learn from my mistake 18 years ago on my old '84..did 33's and 4.88's--six months later went to 35's and 5.29's it was an expensive lesson to learn...

i did 4.88s and a lockright in the rear. that being said if i were to do it again i would have gone with a aussie in the rear and 5.29s (if you do occasional moderate trails and do not do the duals or t-case reduction)

right now i have an '86 pickup..but i wont lock it..
if i get an 89-95 ext cab pickup then it'll be locked front and rear with aussies..
or possible e-locked rear and aussie'd front..
or if i get a tacoma i'll have to get one with the factory e-locker..then do an aussie front when i regear it..
that being said..just because you have a locker in front doesnt mean its going to pull..as long as the hubs are unlocked then the locker wont work?..
of course living in snowy areas a locked front in 4wd wouldnt be fun....
but if you live in a place like mine..hardly any snow falls here..which is why im gettin my next truck locked F/R..

personally, I got a p/u with a lock right in the rear.... If I could do it over again...I would have saved my $ and bought a detroit tru track for the front, and welded the rear... The locker in the rear dosent help all that much in a p/u without a bit of weight over the tires.... now for my runner....I would def go with a lockright for the rear.... my runner with open/open goes almost as good as the p/u with the lockright in the rear.
as for gears...I'd say go with the 4.88's, you could still run them with 35's if needed, and if u do alot of highway, you'll get decent mpg.

yea 5.29's and 33x9.50's would put you at like 4800 rpms on the highway at 70..
but with 4.88's it'll put you at about 3000rpms at 70
and of course going with 9.50's you'll probably be pretty quick because of the light weight..get ya a set of aluminum rims if ya dont have em..that'll cut down on rolling resistance as well..
when i get my new truck..
im gonna go with 4.88's..lockers front and rear (aussie front for sure..maybe rear to possibly e-locker though) with maybe a 3in. susp lift (found one on a parts truck around here that im gonna try to snatch up before somebody else does)..then some 285/75's on some NIICE rims..(hopefully Dick Cepek TORQUE's)

if you are regearing just do 5.29s I had 5.29s in my old 83 and wend from 33s to 35s and was glad I did 5.29 first my next truck I did 4.56 to try to get lower RPMs but lost out big time 4.88 would be better but if I ever get the money to do it again Im going 5.29 and as far as lockers I ran my 83 open front detriot rear and it worked great and I have also run spool front and rear and it was great off road not on street if you can do a E-lokcer or if you want cheap do the aussie Ive known to many lock rites to break very few if any aussies
