Center console (armrest part)

So has anyone put another center console into their 1st gen 4runner? In my cj i have a vdp locking, vinyl console with cup holders and everything. So i was wondering if that'll fit in my runner. The version in the jeep is too long but i know they make different models so i was wondering what other people have done.

In both of my first generation 4runners the center consoles have been extremely brittle and always crack on me. With my old manual 4runner it was an easy swap to a second generation 4runner center console. I'm about to hit the junkyard and see if the automatics swap over just as easily...

I picked up this Tuffy console over Christmas:
http://www.tuffyproducts.com/p-94-se...6-12-wide.aspx

I partially installed it but need to spend more time fabbing a bracket and mounting it securely. It's a bit taller than the OEM one, WAY tougher (and locks!), and has optional cupholders.

hmm i donnt think an ammo box will work for my application, i like a comfy armrest, a lock and some cup holders . That tuffy one is nice, really nice but $250 for it is ehh a bit much.

there was a really good home made one with wood, fiberglas and fleece (hardened to shape with fiberglas resin). It looked OEM at the end of it. It was a great write up here but I honestly forget who did it. I was going to TRY that route, but then decided to get the Tuffy. I got it with free shipping and no tax from some 4x4 online place for about $230 I think. I have the top off in the summers so I like it being tough and lockable - worth the investment to me.

I forget, but I just Googled it and it looks like Amazon has it for $230 and I think free shipping.

Maybe check ebay too?

I saw a 6 1/2" used Tuffy a while back USED on eBay for quite a bit less. Even $230 isn't that bad if you consider what a dealer would charge for a console in a new vehicle. Tuffy also sells extra cupholders that attach to the console for the back seat passengers. Philbert, I'd be interested in a write up showing what brackets you used to install it. Where are you going to relocate the three switches? I'd also like to see how the console meets the shifter area.

Yeah, well.....It's not 100% installed yet There are 3 holes that are used to mount it - one in the front and two in the back. I drilled into my tunnel and mounted the front hole...loosely, but haven't tackeled the back two. Mostly because there are hard lines right below them in the tunnel under the truck! Also, I want to try and move it back a couple inches to I can mount the cup holders on the front and clear my transfer case shifter. You can mount the cup holders on the front or rear of this console.

I just haven't gotten my act together...had a transmission swap I had to do TWICE, which got in the way. Hope to tackle this summer - it's the next project.

The switches I'm not sure yet....will hope to fab something up to mount them near the 5 speed shifter where the old broken plastic bezel was.

When I get it together I'll do a write up with photos, promise!

My OCD demanded that I do it.

just trying to show ho his worked out. definitely a viable option over the OEM one. and when speaking of useful square inches, I think you can see his has it over stock.

I think I might end up fabbing my own only because I want it all one piece and I want to mount my CB in there. I love where the extinguisher is, mines on my roll bar, looks cool but far away.

I made mine out of speaker box wood. I will take pic of it latter if you want. It does lock and I put 2 cupholders in it
