A/C evaporator install problem
I removed an A/C unit out of another 1985 pickup except it was EFI and mine is carb. The install went great except one problem and have to plugs that won't mate ( See picture) The unit I'm installing is a Denso unit and not an aftermarket unit.
Was there a difference in a carb evaporator assy and a EFI one? I cannot find any difference in the FSM How screwed am I? Is it possible to buy another sub harness from the dealer with correct plug? I got a good deal on the A/C system $25 for everything minus the compressor.
. Help

You will need to find a wiring diagram for both trucks so you can match the wires, get the other end of the plug from the other truck, if the wires match color for color then splice the new plug inplace of the original.
I was thinking of adding A/C to my truck also, is all the wiring thats needed for the A/C already there behind the dash ?, what about the wiring for the A/C compressor ?.

The FSM does not show any huge difference between a carb model and EFI model on the wiring diagram. It shows the EFI having a few wires tapped in, but none of the color codes on this one A/C plug make any sense.
I plan to try the junk yards when I go I a trip in two weeks to Portland and see if I can find anymore trucks to look at the setups. The truck I pulled my current setup off of was crushed as of today.
Everthing up until this point has been plug and play, no splicing or any of that nonsense. Good thing the summer heat is a a few months off.
BTW I went to the dealer and that was a waste of time they new nothing said nothing.

I'm in the same scenario as you, but the I took the ac out of my 84 4runner and put it in the wifes 88 4runner 22re. I ended up jumping some wires to get it to work, but the problem is I have to turn it off after a few minutes or else it will get to cold and blow frost, it has the wrong idle up box deal (the small curcit board on the box). its not used much anymore since we bought a civc to haul the kids around with, thats the whole reason I installed it. If i remember right there is a short piece of wire that I needed with one plug on each end that plugged into your plugs on your pics. I'll take a look at mine tomorrow.

Update, I think I found out what the deal is. The truck I removed the unit from had a towing package with a 22RE.
Now if it did not not have the towing package and just a 22RE I would have been fine I guess. The 22RE with the towing package has what I guess it an idiot system built in. So if the engine reaches a certain high temp it cuts the compressor off to save the motor. This is what it looks like in the scematic
This is all a guess at this point, but will keep everyone updated do a full write up for those wishing to retro A/C to theor old rigs.

Yes, please do a complete write up when your done with your truck. im in the process now of gathering all the parts needed to put a/c in my 85 truck, so far i have the evaperator and this comming weekend i will be out looking for the hoses condensor and compressor. everything looks easy to do so far, the only thing that looks like its going to be hard is putting the holes in the fire wall. what did you use to make the holes ?.

Yet another update and still a steep learning curve, found another sub-harness today. Another 85 truck and it's still wrong. Until I get this wiring issue solved I cannot proceed with the rest of the install.
Truck I pulled it out of was a 1 ton. It looks like it could be made to work, but I have emailed a few dealers and if I can get a new harness I buying a new one.
Note to others, A/C retrofit is a PITA on a 22R.

The evaperator i got for my truck is out of an 84 carbed truck, and i got the sub-harness that has the plugs for the a/c switch, relay and fuses, as well plugs for the fan. the plugs on my harness are a little different from the ones in your picture. i will be going back to pic n pull this sunday to get some more stuff that i need, and i will see if i can come up with something that can help you out.

Update: I found the correct harness today, and it went in without a snap. The strange part is it came out of a 1986 SR5 truck with EFI
I'm not sure if its because they are California models. The one I pulled it off of and mine.
In my search I have found a total of three different styles evaporator harnesses
That leaves only one part I need, the, VSV and compressor harness which has three wires.
