the birfield is the ball on the actual axel.(where the inner an outer axel connect)

the knuckel is what wabbit posted in that exploded view, it attaches to the ball on the housing, (what you posted pics of)

You can get the 54mm socket in 1/2". i think the SAE equivalent is 2 3/32"

here are a couple more links on rebuilding the front end:
http://www.birfield.com/~morgan/tech/axle/
4Crawlers is pretty good: http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTri...eRebuild.shtml

Good luck.
That is pretty nice looking truck...

I did mine a week ago, Transmission had a foam like substance in it for oil, it came out like dirty soap suds with a bit of sludge kind of stuff at the bottom, had about .5" tall of shavings on the drain plug. Transfer case had what looked like milk(water) and only 1L of it, and shavings.. axle fluids were clean.

Whats cool is I drove it probably 4000km's on those fluids, only thing I noticed was a bit of bearing noise on deceleration/down shifts, Now its quiet and perfectly fine. Now I should probably do the engine oil, its extremely black... I just dont care anymore, Ive worked on the truck every weekend since ive owned it.
