The only thing I have heard of doing for inside frame rust apart from stripping the truck to the frame and acid dipping it or sand blasting is to pour oil down the inside of the frame rails. I did it to mine. Figured it couldn't hurt.

Definetly POR 15 that frame asap before it gets worse. I did mine and it looks sweet now. Give that truck a good original paint job and you will have a museum peice lol.

Interior frame rust preventative: Linseed oil. It's been used for years, or check out Boeshield T-9. For inside the frame.

If you want the rust to stop, you have to sandblast or convert it, then paint it. With either POR-15 if you never wan't to mess with it again. Or a brush on chassis paint.

Rust like that isn't bad, if you keep it inside and wash the chassis the truck will last for a long long time in its current state. If your interested in restoring it, then go with the above method. A wire wheel will take you an incredible ammount of time, and you'll be sick of rust/iron under your skin and dust in your lungs and eye. Find two or three weekends, take it apart, sandblast, paint, reassemble. This would be an opportunity to replace bushings, go through the knuckle seals, change fluids etc. I've done it with two Jeeps now, and it's like a new lease on life for the vehicle.

Very nice truck. Wire wheel the chassis and use some good antirust paint for now and eventually por 15 that sucker. Surface rust looks minimal for a truck that age. Attend to that rust in the bed to before it spreads. You have a truly great find their, very jealous.

That's what happens when a California truck moves to Minnesota! I'll bet just a few years back that truck was rust free. Get to that stuff quick or it will rust away before your eyes.

The cap on the steering box is the vent and the check/fill plug. I think a 17mm box wrench will get it off. It may be a bit stubborn. Mine has a good leak going, but I don't really notice any sound or really even performance difference when it gets really low. The truck is a bear to steer, I guess that's just the way no power steering is.

Nice truck! Very similar to mine, but your interior is in great condition. Mine looks almost that good after finding a perfect dash pad on craigslist.

the cap on my steering box comes off fairly easily, twist and pull up. I'm not sure what type of fluid goes in there or how much, so i'd like some input as well.

very nice truck. that rust underneath willl spread quickly, so i'd start taking things off and sanding and painting, or POR15 the part and around the frame. and check all the body mounts like has been said before. loooks like a lot of hard work, ,but you'll have a near perfect first gen. that will last forever.

Pretty sure GL4/5 gear oil goes in the steering box....but I'll have to double check. The ease of getting that plug out all depends on the trucks history, I guess. If it hasn't come off in 15 years and has some rust, or if a previous owner really cranked it down the last time they checked it 8 years ago, or if they just hand-tightened it... anyway you could be right, it may just come right off. Mine didn't.

Edit-Oh maybe you just mean the cap/vent? I'm talking about the actual plug the vent is on. Anyways...

so for por 15 do i just buy some cheap 3 or 4 inch paintbrushes and get to work? or do you have to use their pre treatment? so basically it does not to be a pretty paint job with the por 15 just coat everything?

as for the comment about CA truck, no. this has been a Midwest truck all its life. but just stored inside and driven only 51,000 miles.

Ok. I didn't recognize that "extra" piece on the air filter assembly, and it looked like it has more hoses than my '83. Maybe it's just the difference in years. Figured it had more emissions stuff and was Californian.

I'd sure be interested in that shell.....

another question. the seat is like a bench in the back and buckets where you sit, so is there a seat cover that can go on these seats or have to mod one?

There are some that will work, but I'm not sure where to get them, yet. My truck has seat covers and it's the same as yours, and they guy I bought it from said he found replacements for them, just hadn't ordered them. They're low on my list right now so I haven't searched...but as far as I know you can still find them.
