My 82 is a go-cart now

I changed out my shocks today and as I taking for a test drive about a 1/4 mile away from my mom's home the engine started to like a go-cart.. it was kind of sputtering and not sounding right and then it didn't seem have full power.

After I got all my stuff packed up and headed back to my house. It started all over, I thought maybe it was the gas as I was almost empty. So I stopped and filled it up. Then it wouldn't start, it took maybe 10 cranks to get to fire. once it started it hard to keep it running, I then headed home, it was slow ride as I couldn't get over 35 miles per hour no matter what gear I was in.

My truck sounds like cars you get to drive at Disneyland on their little freeway. it sounds like a go-cart and is about as fast.

All the gauges read normal all the way home. I have no idea what could be wrong, not a mech guy.

it is a 22r with a weber carb.

I'd be willing to bet it's ignition related. I had a similar problem and it ended up being my distributor cap being filled with corrosion. After I replaced the plugs, cap, and rotor, it ran like the day it came out of the factory.

I'd just check the plugs first, it's a possibility they could be fouled, I've seen that happen many times before too.

BTW the plugs, distribuator and wires all looked good.

I took off the air cleaner and it smelled like gas, and was sorta wet with gas. The carb looks clean, but the floats do stick when it being started and afterwards the exhaust smells like fuel.

I tried some carb cleaner that did not help. I did notice what looks like some fuel leakage under the carb though.

and then looking more at motor I found something that I am not sure if is suppose to have a hose hooked up to or not.

and if it does need a hose, I have no idea where it connects too.

that hose goes into the stock airfilter thingy for the carb.
just plug it up, because that's a vacuum leak lol

My lil yota did that same thing. I pulled the valve cover off and noticed that the top timing gear bolt backed off. The truck still ran but not good at all. I tightened the bolt back down. When I tightened the bolt back down the timing went right back to normal. So I guess I got lucky. So you might want to check that!

its a far shot but its not impossible with ur low fuel level u sucked some junk up and now u have a restriction in ur filter? just something to check. and its cheap to change and should be done more than most of us do anyway. Spark, Air, Fuel. get those and go more in depth.

x2 on the fuel filter. I had wierd stuff happen w/ a clogged fuel filter, I wonder if all that extra fuel in/around the carb is because in attempting to get it moving/ started you're flooding it out. I would assume that the carb is not nessicarly the place to start, I think it is a product of the problem, not the problem itself, but I also have never had this issue.

we found out the problem this weekend.. Need to rebuild the carb, part of the problem is the Accelerator Pump Diaphragm has tears in it.

and while we got it apart we are going to the vent mod to make it climb.

Well I got the carb rebuilt and slapped on and suprise the truck is still running bad. We did a compression check and #3 & #4 Cylinders were very low. The guy doing the work is going to dig into the engine and see what is going on.

Well it looks like I need a new head. the head gasket is shot between the #3 and #4 cylinders, along with the head. there is about an 1/2 gouge between the cylinders with a dip/divot in the middle.

It seems when that happened it backfired thru the intake manifold and out the carb, which is what fried the Carb.

Now i am trying to find a new head for 82 22R.

The problem with the ones from engnbldr.com is that they are from 1985 on up. Which has different shaped ports, which means... new header and intake manifold.

I need to get some pics of the old head, which I can do when I go drop it off to get my core charge money back for the new head.
