I started to dive into this thing yesterday. First order of business was to find out where the oil leaks are coming from. After a steam bath with some degreaser the majority of the leaks are coming from the valve cover gasket and half moons. After I changed those things were pretty good up top. Turns out one of the vacuum lines was mixed up on the dizzy. After I did the timing and a valve adjustment the thing fires and runs GREAT and no leaks.
NOW for the down under... The output shaft seal is pissing all over the place. I am reasonably certain the rear main is weeping but I need some more time to determine that. There is a hole in the header at the base where it meets the muffler. There is no cat, so that is a major issue being I live in CA. The rear diff is leaking I think.
And so it begins!

Fix that bed quick! Good find. Since the weather here in the south is getting warmer, the 1st gens are coming back out, we wave at each other like bikers. It's great to see another one still kickin'

I am perplexed! Could someone with factory bucket seats in a 1st gen tell me if they recline?? I can't find the handle to save my life.
Also, what is the deal with the heater. When it is on high it only blows on the window and the floor. Does the heat blow on the driver and passenger directly? I know older VW models they only blew on the window and floor.

I got a shortbed I might be looking to get rid of off my '83. Far as I know it's been a SoCal truck it's whole life, hardly any rust. Not sure when I'll be heading back to Oregon to see family, but I got a friend that lives in Brookings...

Thanks Jonny!
I just picked up a shortbed this morning in decent shape. It will take some work but it doesn't have much rust.

Nice, had to try. I'm hoping I can get rid of it for a lil bit of money to someone who needs it, since my cab is already a lil beat. I'll be watching your mods on this one still, gotta get ideas where to go with mine once it's driveable.

Hey Scuba! Haven't seen you around YT in a while. The title and all that say 82 so maybe the PO swapped out the lights. Not sure.

82 and 83 had square headlights, different instrument cluster, single center-handle tailgate etc.
