found out while replacing my head gasket that the timing chaing guides are both broken. Pass side only about the top inch, above the bolt, and drivers side the top bolt hole was broken, so it's loose on the top. my inclination is to do the metal timing set up, but I just got laid off, so money is tight at best. what do you guys think?

I would pony up and do the metal guides, you will kick yourself later if you don't. If anything, the metal guides prevent the chain from wearing through the timing cover and creating one heck of a mess in your engine.

which parts would you replace as far as oil pump and crank shaft seals? what else do I need?

Personally, i would do it all. Pump, crank seal, gaskets, the whole 9 yards. Better to do it right the first time than to get back into it again in 6 months. In the middle of the freeway

Yeah tearing down the motor is a pita. Do whatever it takes to get 'er all done while you're in there

Dang it! yeah, I don't know how many times I have to learn that lesson before it'll finally sink in, but it's at least one more time. Thanks guys. So it's metal timing chain guide, oil shaft seal, crank shaft seal... and that's it? I hope so cuz my credit card is lofty and no income... ummm
