Actually I was very lucky in finding this truck about 3 years ago. I bought it from the original owner who is an older lady. The seats were in very good shape when I got the truck because she always had seat covers on them. I cleaned them with a laundry brush and laundry detergent. I planned on steam cleaning them too but they didn't really need it. I also purchased some matching seat covers on ebay to keep the original seats in good shape. I wasn't very happy paying $3K for the truck three years ago but I really wanted a first generation toy. I was planning on selling it a few months ago before the restoration cuz I was hurting financially but now my wife is teaching and we are doing great. I'm glad I kept it and I plan on buying and restoring a 2nd 1st gen or a 2nd gen toy. It's like an addiction....

It still looks new and I think it's gonna stay that way for a while. Just make sure you wash your carpet very thoroughly before you paint. I actually threw mine in the washer in the delicate "hand wash" cycle. And before I did that I washed it with a laundry brush and garden hose. I wouldn't highly recommend throwing it in the washing machine cuz it kinda tore a few weak spots in my carpet but they were underneath the seat so you can't see it. As long as you make SURE your carpet is super clean before you paint it, the paint will not come off.

Yes only one can but I put several coats until I finished the can. It was faded quite a bit around the center console but otherwise the carpet itself was in good shape.

when i took out my carpet i washed it with a pressure washer and liquid laundry detergent. still have to put it back in the truck. seeing this thread im soo gonna paint it black.

Pressure washer will definetly do a great job cleaning it. I woulda done that too if my pressure washer hadn't crapped out on me. Post some pics once you do it so we can see how it comes out.

That looks great the carpet in my 81 was completely shot, so i truck bed lined the floor and then bought some out door carpet from lowes for like 15 bucks and cut it to fit. it actually worked really well and i can just drag it out and hose it off when it gets muddy, but very nice truck

Very sharp truck... good looking kid too but be careful he already has that look in his eye... that truck is his and he's only letting you borrow it for a few years...

1 year update...Did it work or not??
After one year of having painted the OEM carpet with Duplicolor fabric and vinyl paint it still looks brand new and as good as the first day I painted the carpet. It doesn't have any fading and none of the paint has flaked away. I would definetly recommend this simple and inexpensive fix to anyone. I also used this on the interior plastic trim and panels which still also look great. As stated before just make sure you thoroughly clean the carpet otherwise the paint may not stick as well. looks great , and will hold up well .. glad to see another 1st gen saved , instead of hacked up and under the knife !
I re-dyed my complete interior (in the old white knight) many many years ago .. I re dyed even the headliner and door panels , as the PO was a smoker
I dont own the truck anymore , but the dye lased great for 5 years untill i parted the truck , .. only ware was the door handle pulls and it was min ware
