33's @ 5.29's yay or nay

Is there anyone out there running 33's and 5.29 gears?

My rig is slooow with the 33/20r combo.
I may be able to get a 5.29 3rd for cheap and need to regear badly.
I know 4.88's are optimal, but I am trying to do it on the cheap and this may be a way in.
Will it rev too high on the hwy? Those in the know, opinions please!

it definitely won't hurt anything. it'll give you a lot more power, too.

not really man when my bro had to replace the gears in his truck my dad and him did it themselves (my dad know a lot about cars). Where are u from anyways?

If it's an auto, DEFINITELY.

I have 33's with 3VZE/R150 5speed and tach about 3500 at 70MPH - it's humming pretty good on the highway.

If you have 4 speed with no O/D, it's going to be screaming at highway speeds.

If you're getting the whole 3rd member, you can easily install it yourself. If you're just getting the gears, you should find someone to set them up. (Most off-road shops do it pretty regularly - should be about $200/axle if you take the 3rd member into them)

80mini i do know of a place that could probably put gears in for ya www.ori4x4.com they are a great place. They are behind the Southtowne dealership as u get off he interstate, i think the exit is like 47 im not real sure dont hold me to it. There's some info on the website. There ya go.

1st genrunner :In Duluth for now truck is in Moreland (cant work on it at my apt) and the wife and I are trying to get a house in Tucker as we speak!
So those in the know, the cost for gears and install ( will take the 3rd's in) I am looking at a little over a grand? Are there any 3rd members out there already built for better than $625. Truck has a 5spd.

Anyone ever seen a mini with 3-4' lift and 31's? Thinkin it would look terrible! Pics? Opinions?

FYI: If you are in the market for an early mini truck there were a couple for sale on the collectorcartrader website. One in Lagrange the guy is asking 1800 and the other one is red with the original white rims 2500?

a mini with 3-4inch of lift and 31's would look great! It would prolly look better if you had 33's but 31's will look just fine ! Duluth is about 30-45 mi from hear i think. I am 16 yrs. old, this is my first vehicle and im hoping to never get rid of it. Right now im working full-time this summer to get money for a 4-5" SL with 33's, 4.88 gears and a locker in the rear end. Thanks for the info about the trucks tho. This isnt a first gen truck but it is an '84 with i think like a 6 or 7" lift and 35's, it is my bro's truck.

I have 33's a 4 speed and 5.29's.... If you have a 5speed you should be able to cruise the highways alright, I would say around 60-65 max comfortably.

I have a 4 speed so I try and stuck around 50-55mph max....

As far as power it's uhmmm I don't know how to describe it, your truck will no longer be quick to accell at all, I'm in out of gears so fregging fast its crazy... I feel like I lost accelleration on just casual driving, but like I said your shifting alot sooner and alot faster... 1st gear will go to 3000rpm QUICK, same with 2nd, once you hit 3rd and 4th its little more sporty feeling...

Where I really love it is when your up to speed, once your up to 50mph the thing feels like a tank, hills that I had to downshift on , I barely have to give it any gas at all to keep up my speed, up in the mountains its even better, I love being able to let the truck idle and do its thing.

That said if I had to do it over again I would, although a 5speed would be the icing on the cake.

The only downside is your daily casual driving accelleration is lost, now if you like to keep your skinny pedal on the floor you'll gain it back and then some.

As far as torque goes, for example say your engine creates 100ft-lbs torque multiply that by your diff ratio say its 4.10... in 4th gear (your 1:1 drive gear) your essentially making 410ft-lbs at your rear wheels, now with 5.29's that would 529ft-lbs at your rear wheels, thats roughly 20% more torque. so you'll definently get alot more PULLING power.

So if you can get a deal on some 5.29's I say go for it. Maybe later on lift a couple more inches and stick some 35's underneath it.

He said it's a 20R, that's a 4 cylinder in a 79 or 80 truck.
No autos back then, probably a 4 spd manual.
Stock ratios were higher, 79 was like 3.90.
5.29's would be way too low a ratio for 33's in that case.

I ran 33's w/5.29's on my 22R/5 spd Runner (originally 4.10's) while the 36's were on order. Like a previous poster said, always shifting, hard to find the right speed/gear combo. It sucked.

stock ratios were lower than the usual 4.10, '79 and '80 had 4.375 gears as the L43 4 speed has a higher gearset(3.67 1st gear instead of 3.93 like later trucks). '81 had 3.90 gears, and most others had 4.10 or 4.11 gears stock.

dont know if you found your thirds yet but randys ring and pinion has complete thirds for $440 ready to install with whatever ratio you want

Not trying to steal this thread or anything... but...
My '83 has 9 inches of lift on 35" tires and I have the stock 22R with 5 speed... what gearset would be optimal do you think?

Others may know better, but I think 5.29 for 35's and 4.88 for 33's. So 5.29's!

you will be much happier with the performance of the 5.29's.4.88's are for 31's & 32's

im running 4.10s and 35's and its not bad at all. I do have a 22r that runs awesome and a 5sp. I have one third all set up with 5.29's and im going with um cause i intend on runing 36's again and it didnt do to well with 36/13.50/Irocks.
