I am new here so hello to all. I have a 1980 20r Toyota pickup. I am having carb problems and I need some advice. What is involved with removing the stock setup and replacing with a weber carb. Any problems with removing all of the vacuum hoses and the like to run a basic non smog carb.

Welcome to Yotatech! I recently read a thread from a guy who had bad experience with a weber on his 22r. Said something about hesitation and general bad performance off-road. I personally keep my 4banger stock and it runs fine. I dont know jack about 20r's but could guess you'd be better off not going aftermarket. Just my .02

And I have removed all the smog stuff as well. No prob. Just get some of those little black rubber plugs.

Right now I am all stock. I guess my question should have been what of all the vacuum lines and junk can I remove and what do I have to keep and still run a stock carb setup. Or do I need to go with a weber if I remove all the emission junk.

I don't think you need to go to the Weber just to remove the smog stuff. I don't know what all your 80 has, but my 83 is running just fine with pretty much everything vacuum related removed. I capped all the vac lines to the EGR, the Reed air pump, and even the charcoal filter which I think vents the gas tank fumes. Is your truck running poorly or are you just looking for improvements? By the way, I'm still running my PCV system.

I believe I am having some carb related issues. I would also like to remove all of the smog equipment that I do not necessarily need. I am going to replace the carb to see if that is the problem. It started out as a stumble problem but now it will not accelerate past 25 mph. I believe the accelerator pump is bad.

OK. I replaced the carb and it works great. Until it warms up and I have the same problem. Stumble and not much power. Since it runs good until it warms up is their a chance it is the EGR valve? I believe I am going to cap off all the vacuum lines except for the distributor and any that the carb related items needs. Any ideas??

I love my weber, but I ran the stock carb on my 22r with no problem for years. My truck ran poorly when cold too. I never really liked the stock toyota choke and fast idle. I think that caused some of my problems. It could also be a leak somewhere between the carb and the head, and when the aluminum warms up it expands and seals the leak. You can try spraying some wd40 around the carb and manifold are and see if it runs any better.

My problem starts when it warms up. It runs great when cold.

I believe the EGR only operates when engine is warm, so it seems like if it was not working properly, your cold operation would be a problem. Check for vacuum leaks, cap off what you don't need, put fresh hoses on what's left and see if it gets better. Also, you may want to pull the valve cover and check that your valves are properly adjusted.

Sorry about that, could still be choke not opening once it warms up. Not a head gasket is it?

Well I hope it is not a head gasket. It just started all of the sudden. I will plug all the vacuum ports on monday and see if that fixes it. I am also going to replace the carb gaskets too.

I am also considering removing all unecessary vacuum hoses and emissions related equipment since I no longer need emissions testing on my 81 22R.

There is a ton of hoses running all around the carb and intake, does anyone know which are required for emissions and which are for basic engine functions?

has anyone had any problems with doing this?

what about the lines running from the exhaust manifold to the EGR?

how do u not need emission testing and you live in california??

San Marcos, Texas. Any vehicle 1981 and older needs no emissions testing.

It could be that your choke is not going off like it should. My 82 did that to me so I finally got mad and took the electric choke off and put a manual choke in its place and I couldn't be happier with it. It runs perfectly now.

thats a good idea! how did you go about changing to a manual choke? did you run a cable?

Yes I bought a 4 foot I think manual choke conversion kit. You can pick it up at a parts store pretty much anywhere. It wasn't hard at all to put in and it works very nicely. Takes a little bit of getting used to but I would never go back to the old setup. I have fast idle whenever I want it and its much easier to control the truck now than before.
