Mom-mobile goes on road trip...lots of dorky pics
Starting with a hike at Devil's Head, drive up Mt. Evans "highest road in US" and then to Leadville via 24 to Turquoise lake where we camped.
Day 2, a 6 mile hike around Turquoise lake
On the way from Turquoise lake spotted this:
and yes, I know, I am a dork...but really, how many of these azure deals am I gonna see?
From there it was over to Weston Pass
and over to Mosquito Pass (FUN!!)
and back to Leadville. On to Fruita for some camping on public grounds.
Day 3, Made the sunrise trip to Moab and hiked the practice loop on slickrock,
then drove up to a view of Mt Peale
and beyond until I got to a go-around I couldn't make so came back
and camped at Slickrock.
Day 4, we headed over to Mesa Verde. I don't think they gave much thought to their signage - the second one states no food or drink.
My 3 year old climbed the ladders for the tour we took..very cool little guy he is.
After Mesa Verde we moseyed to Hermosa Creek to camp.
Day 5, a hike at Hermosa Creek
then down the Million dollar highway to Engineer(?) pass just south of Ouray.
FUN!! FUN!! FUN!!
scraped my hitch a little here but that's it for "carnage" for the entire trip, upsidedown hitch: priceless.
and then back down towards Silverton
I liked the first part of the drive best up to and a bit past Poughkeepsie Gulch, and some of the switchbacks up to the pass too. This was my favorite, then Mosquito.
and over to Owl Creek pass to camp.
Day 6 we went to the Black Canyon of Gunnison for a little hiking and seeing, then to Hartman Rocks to play around a little on the easy stuff and camp.
Day 7 we went to Monarch pass and hiked 7 miles on top
then drove to the Rainbow trailhead and hiked a couple miles of the bottom
We camped off of old Monarch Pass.
Day 8 took us to the Great Sand Dunes where we hiked to the top
and yes, I still know I look like a dork.
After that we farted around at Zapata Falls, then on to our last camp at Kiowa State fishing lake in Kansas. On the way we passed a yard full of interesting sculptures
Day 9 we headed the rest of the way home and passed another yard of sculptures
It sure beats the 5 and 6 legged cows of hwy 70. Some burritos at Mexican Villa in Springfield, another 3 hours and we're home.
I know I didn't drive anything tough but I loved it and was impressed with the stock-mobile, running boards, highway tires, jam packed to the ceiling and all. The kids liked it ok except for the occasional bump of elbow and head on the truck's interior.
Ok, that was mean. I shouldn't have laughed.

I see no dorks in this report, sorry. Excellent (FUN) report and photos! This is what it is all about! Beautiful family and cool choice of vehicles to get you to the adventure.

Awww, shucks guys, thanks!
I saw a bunch of really cool yotas and other trucks out there and wondered if any of them were yotatechers too. If you saw a light blue 3rd gen it might've been me.
Unless it did something to piss you off....then it wasn't!

Out of curiosity, which ruin did you tour at MV? You mentioned climbing ladders, so my guess is balcony house. I went there for the 1st time this summer, and that is the ruin I decided on. It was really interesting and a beautiful place. I plan to go back and see some more.

Yeah, balcony house was the one. I agree, the whole area is really interesting...wonder what made them abandon the idea so quickly?

Looks like an adventure full of "Stop touching me!", "You're on my side of the seat!" and "Are we there yet?"
No, seriously. Looks like it'll be one of those times the family still talks about 10 years from now. Loved the pics! Thanks for the story.

This is the dorkiest thing I have ever seen! j/k Seriously, great pics and story. It was cool to see some of the places that we missed on our summer trip and reminded me of some of the things we did. There is no way my wife would hike that much though, kudos to you. That first part of the trail leaving from Ouray to engineer pass is really cool.

Would love to wheel with y'all too.....but we had no itinerary, just a very basic idea of where we'd be and winged it from there. My favorite way to travel. This is my 8th trip out to CO and 5th to Moab but the first for my husband's daughters. Next time I'll have to try to have a better idea of the wheres/whens so I can bother some of you to show me where to go. I miss mountain biking out there most...waiting for my son to get big enough....but got more than a little bite in the butt for the wheeling on this trip for sure.
