While getting my tires rotated a few days ago we noticed sludge/greese/oil substance all over the rear brakes. (Mainly the right.) After taking it to the local shop, they called back a few hours later and said it was a leaking rear axle seal. Now they said it will cost $700 to replace both seals. Anyone know what might have caused the leak? Clogged differential breather? Thanks.

I got the same thing (and the same bill) a few weeks back. Only thing that I did that leapt to mind was playing in the dunes a couple times shortly before they reported that fun and frolic.

sorry it's not more help.

could be a clogged diff breather, it'll build pressure and make the oil ooze out.

the seals are about $7 each, not too hard to replace yourself. the problem is that the gear oil tends to wash out the grease from the axle bearing. i've heard you can repack it yourself if you're careful(use a pic to remove the seal from the bearing) but they cost about $50 new and take a press to install/remove

Did you have it done at a shop, or DIY?

Big-O was the one that hit me for $700-ish...

I'll try and find the receipt to see what all they did, but it was definitely them...

Ouch! A buddy in Grass Valley was quoted $650 at the Big-O up there, mine was done here in Syberia.
