1997 Honda Crv
Hi, I just got a 1997 hona crv for my fiance. It is 4wd automatic with 130,000 miles. I got it cheap because it makes a metal on metal banging sound from the front passenger axle area. I thought it was just a really bad cv but I changed the axle today and that is not the problem.

When I had it apart and looked inside the transmission, the part with the splines that the end of the axle goes into moves. You can moves it up and down or side to side about a half of an inch. I am assuming that this is the problem. I am not a transmission tech so unbolting the transmission case and digging into it is something I would only do if I had some idea of what part needs to be replaced and how difficult the job is.

When I was spinning the splined part inside the transmission it felt like the teeth of the gears when touching but just extremely looses. I am assuming they are grinding and they catch sometimes. This might be my noise.

When I say I looked inside the transmission I mean that I just looked inside the hole where the axle shaft goes.

the part with the splines is the differential, not sure it should be floating like that.
id pull the pan and see what you can find.
im guessing the diff spun a bearing or 2,probally ate into the trannys housing.
id locate a pull a part near you, odds are you can get a tranny for under $100....pull it yourself.
not sure if you guys have pull a parts up there.
the old crv's are nice vehicles,130k is pretty low miles for a 97.
