3.4 auto swap done.. and cheap! Thanks Yotaetech!
I got my truck done this weekend. Put a 3.4 out of a T-100(auto, 4x4) into a 1990 4x4 truck, auto. I've got the A/C and add/4x4 to wire up yet.. but otherwise its done and much to my surprise i had no cel codes thrown, and no problems at all. It fired right up with no issues at all. About time some good luck went my way. :drink:
Just wanted to thank Yotatech.com and its members for all the posts, threads and pm's some of you replied to all helping me out! I flat out couldn't have done it without finding this site... PERIOD! :rockin: There is everything you need to know using the search engine here!!! A special thanks to Thefallman! Not many auto swaps done compared to manuals so his past posts and answered PM's in the "feeling it out stages" were enough to let me know i could do it myself. I've never messed much with auto's let alone the electronics so this was the part i was dreading and its the only part where the info isn't really available since each swap is different. It wasn't bad at all, in fact it was alot easier than i thought it would be. I kept thinking that as i was doing it, but didn't say that to anyone.. cause i the back of my head i kept thinking.. yah.. be cocky and think this is easy and then watch your wiring harnes melt when you put the battery in! LOL :D I took it slow.. double and triple checked my diagram and it went smooth. IMO.. taking your time here is key. Getting in a hurry is when you'll make mistakes! Time: 78 days with 90% of it done just on the weekends. I'm an avid motorcyclist so i had several weekends where i said f-it... and didnt work on it at all! :D It was 3 weeks before i got my hands on a motor too. Cost: I bought the truck with a bad 3.0 in it for $650 ---Sold the extra rims and tires out of the bed for $175 T-100 engine, ECU and harness and most "extra's" for $550(gotta love Craigs list! I'd add in gas money to drive and get the engine.. but we stopped at enough performing arts centers... to declare it an entertainment trip! :D "extras" stock airbox and intake tube(ebay), Neutral switch(new), 4-crawler 2" body lift, belts, hoses, rad shroud, ... etc... $628 Total including buying the truck $1653!! No rust or bondo on the truck either! I might have used up my good luck for years to come! I'll be able to sell my Nissan for more than that! And get more leg room, way more power, cruise, auto hubs, and way nicer looks to boot! All done in my back yard except for taking the old motor out and putting the new one in(borrowed a buddies garage and cherry picker for that) http://inlinethumb43.webshots.com/44...600x600Q85.jpg Using techinfo.toyota.com i laid out the conversion harness on a huge peice of paper(like i read in someone elses thread). It was slow going the first few days as i was learning how to ready the factory wiring diagrams. After i got the hang of that.. it went much faster. http://inlinethumb31.webshots.com/39...600x600Q85.jpg I used the plugs off the T-100 body harness, the 1990 truck body harness and the one extra plug on the T-100 ecu to make a conversion harness. http://inlinethumb35.webshots.com/44...600x600Q85.jpg Finally... a freshly washed running truck! Needs some new rims and tires though! http://inlinethumb41.webshots.com/44...600x600Q85.jpg |

Thanks for the courage boost. I just picked up a motor, trans, ECU and CUT harness(the junk yard took an angle cutter to the entire harness near the firewall) out of a 97 runner that had rolled. $700 for everything and they thru in the tcase too, not that I can use it.
Can you point to the most helpful thread/s you used to do the swap? Most that I have read are 5 speed swaps that do not have to deal with all the auto trans issues. thx |
I'll add posts here as i have time today at work... for now here is some info:
There really isn't alot of auto specific info because most of it pertains to wiring, the rest is the same. And there isn't much you can read on wiring becuase its all specific to your 2 vehicles. I can tell you that you will have a CEL light on all the time using a runner or Tacoma wiring harness and ECU because of the speed sensor differences. And from all i read there isn't anything you can do about it. You need a T-100 ecu and harness to avoid that. Here are a couple threads i had saved for auto specific info: auto swaps: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f160...-a340h-128200/ https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...89-4x4-104219/ www.techinfo.toyota.com is where you'll get your wiring diagrams and repair manual info for both your rigs. They are in Adobe.. so just save them to your computer and you'll have all you need for $15. Build your own crossover: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f160...r-pipe-138902/ Just some other links i had saved throughout this. Somtimes you read an entire thread.. and you might just use one post out of it for your swap.. but it all adds up!! https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f160...13/index2.html http://www.offroadsolutions.com/tech.html#engine https://www.yotatech.com/toyota-research/f-160.html https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f160...16/index2.html http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showt...5&pagenumber=1 https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f160...85/index2.html http://www.4x4wire.com/index.php?opt...tech&Itemid=53 https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f160...38/index3.html https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f160...eknraj-161816/ http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/showfl...=&fpart=1&vc=1 http://www.andrewzook.com/content/view/22/48/1/2/ http://www.4x4wire.com/index.php?opt...tech&Itemid=53 Goats swap: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f160...started-82145/ https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f160...4-swap-128285/ https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f160...warning-93642/ The "stickeys" at the top of this forum will have 90% or better of all the info you need!! :bigok: Feel free to PM me on anythinig. I've just done this once and don't have near the knowledge alot of people do on this site, but i'd be happy to help out any way i can. |
Scored some used 33/10.5 BFG mud terrians the other day. My new black Cragar Soft 8's will be here Monday! :D
Making some shackels today to level out the rear of the truck too. |
Freakin sweet. I am happy to see someone have a good time working on their truck as well as doing on the cheap. Next up......supercharger??? You've got a good looking truck on your hands, congrats

It was fun. I have alot to do to it now that its up and running too. For now its my daily driver so it will stay mild. I work for a trailer mfg that is about to go belly up, so i'm just wanting to get it ALL finished up and reliable for now. Lets see.... To do list: wire up ADD, and A/C mount new rims and my used 33/10.5 tires make homemade shackles to level the rear. wire up stereo raise rear bumper general mait checks cover fender gaps wire trailer wiring plug umm.... LOL Down the road once its not my DD anymore.. then i'll think about other things.. 5.3L GM swap.. SAS... etc... :hillbill: |
Thanks, I have been researching for a few weeks and have not heard about the speed sensor issue. Thinking about about TMZ for the conversion harness to save some time.
What T-Case did you use? |

What T-Case did you use? I just used the stock tranny and t-case that came in the 1990 truck. |
I just realized after reading one of the threads you shared that I could leave my 340 trans from the 3.0 in. I have the trans out of the donor 4runner and was planning on swapping the trans as well. No it sounds like this is not necessary.

It bolts right up, no trans swap needed. |

Got my wheels today. Mounted some used 33/10.5 BFG's on them.
gotta take it back though.. they forgot to balance them and its not driveable over 35mph.. it will shake you off the road!! I got out and saw they had no weight on them at all. :pissed: Ran smooth before with the old 30" tires on them... so i assume its a balancing issue anyway. ?? :dunno: Sure does look better! stock suspension with a 2"body lift(to clear the 3.4). May put a Ball joint spacer lift on for a tad more clearance. http://inlinethumb27.webshots.com/44...600x600Q85.jpg http://inlinethumb47.webshots.com/23...600x600Q85.jpg |

Hey Gravehunter, can you tell me the exact code for your transmission (the one on the compliance plate) Mine is a A343H and I dont have a speed sensor CEL. The Prado that the ecu was from was a 1999 with a A340F Trans. Just curious as to why mine has no code, might help others doing the same swap. |
