Ok here is the skinny on Tippy and what I have to do:
Man this truck has been some work. We basically kluged a 93 SAS suspention (5.79 gears with Detroit rear and true track (yuk) up front onto an 85 Body/22re/AutoTranny).
On my way to do my last run this weekend The 22re Auto Tranny Pump crapped out. It had 190K on it and we have no idea of how it was treated before we got it 3 months ago. At any rate I am working on getting another one now, getting it re-built and installed so Tippy can get onto the Car Hauler by Aug 22nd. (It was mentioned not to re-build the busted one because metal shavings are all up in there now)
The one I am looking at is from an extended cab pick-up. Does that matter if it is going into an 85 4runner?
Some folks suggested just going Manual but I kinda wonder if that is more work than I can do right now (have to add a clutch) And then really I'd rather do the crawl box at that point.
Just trolling for thoughts, or pointers. The 22re runs awesome now that we did the timing chain so all it needs IMHO is the Tranny fix.

Ok, so the Toyota Master Tech who originally had this spare tranny that I'm gonna get, said it will fit. So for now I am gonna just bolt that one up. He also said I should be able to re-build the one that failed. My question is... am I crazy to try and do that myself?? I'll have time... (I won't attempt it till I get to Houston)

You and TC are pretty mechanically inclined already. I've never rebuilt one, but I have talked to enough people that have done it themselves. The basic understanding I get is that it's really just nuts and bolts. All you have to do is get the kit, organize, and follow the instructions. It's time consuming and all that, but I'm sure you all are no strangers to this. Were it me, I'd do it.
Just as a point of possible interest, I've read recently where some folks prefer using an auto for crawling. Some even install a manual shifter that allows them to go back and forth between the auto function and the manual shifting. This is all related specifically to the A340H, of course, but maybe there's something available in that department for you??? Then again, I don't know which tranny your vehicle has.

Leave the auto in there while you get all your manual swap parts, build your duals, crossmember, pedals, clutch stuff and then swap. Takes an afternoon at most with some extra hands.


I think you are right Brian.... And then I can also Try to rebuild the thrashed Auto just to learn it, and have it as a spare before the manual and crawl-box go in...

I'm still thinking about the swap on my 90 xtra-cab, 22RE. I have the A340F so I would like to rebuild it to say that I did it, but still want to do the swap. Anyone have an opinion on which 5 speed I should look for while accumulating parts? One that can bolt to the 22RE or that I can swap my bell housing out on?
Well Tippy is now here in Texas, but boy do I have my hands full unpacking for the next month before I can even get into the garage

You guys sound very mechanical, but rebuilding an automatic is not something i would do yourself. Its way to much work to take out and put in more than once. Trying to diagnose any problems after the rebuild would be very hard.
Ive blown several autos over the years and assited rebuilding a few of those. They are magical devices best left to wizards and shamans of the tranny guru variety. Plus burned trans fluid reeks

but that was probably a given...
just find the creeper, jackstands and wrenches...I moved 5 years ago and still have some boxes taped up in the garage

welcome to Texas!! On a side note I would leave the rebuild to the experts...if you mess up all that work and time is waisted
Part of me just wants to tear it appart to see what it looks like, so I can understand it. But if I do that an expert can't really rebuild it and ideally we want a rebuild since the one I just put in there is older too... I'll figure that out later. Seriously, my priorities just shifted to un-packing.... But so far I'm liking it here!

ended up taking mine to a shop $400 to rebuild it, had burnt clutches. I think that was reasonable, since I dropped the tranny myself and just took it into them to so the rebuild should have it tomorrow.
Yeah the one I want re-built is already out... so maybe at some point I'll find a good shop to do it!
