Has anyone bi-passed the oil cooler
on a 3vze? Reason I ask is that I'm considering purchasing a rebuilt longblock from Import Engine Specialties. According to the owner of IES unless you tow with your 4runner you don't really need the cooler. He has a plug that he installs in the block and you just run a hose bi-pass. He claims that he demagnetizes the block and if you re-use the old oil cooler it will attract metal particles and clog. Since I'm no mechanic does anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks.

Don't have any info about the oil-cooler but just askin about your engine. Is IES the place that sells on ebay? If so, why not spend an extra 100 and get a COMPLETE and fully assembled rebuilt 3.0 from Orient Engine? Check it out at orientengine.com I'll be ordering a new 3.0 from them at the start of the summer.
Yea Kyle IES does advertise on ebay. The engine is a fully assembled longblock same as Orient Engine.
Does anyone know how to move a thread I meant for this to be posted on 86-95 Trucks and 4runners?

Get a new oil cooler core with the new block, your spending the money anyway why not protect your investment?
I certainly wan't to do the job right with this type of investment. The reason I asked the question was because the rebuilt longblock manuf. suggested I not reuse the exist. one due to the block being "demagnetized". He is the one who has to waurantee the engine (36 mo./60K) He thinks a new one goes for atleast $500-$600. He includes a new pump but not the cooler with his longblock.
I just checked Jaspers website and they also say you must replace the oil cooler. It just keeps adding up. I'll have to get an exact price tomorrow I guess. The cooler isn't listed on the drill down parts for the online toyota parts dealers.

Why do you need a new oil cooler, would it be possible to have the original oil cooler flushed out ?.
the rebuilt manuf. said I couldn't reuse the old one...or just flush it out..he would void the waurantee if I had a problem..

just get an aftermarket oil cooler its cheaper & lower the oil temp more. I just bypassed the oil cooler on my 3.0. I had on my 92 Integra GSR I bypassed it over 3 yrs ago & have not gotten around to installing an aftermarket one & have not had any problems.

is the OEM 3VZE oil cooler also heated by the coolant?
aftermarete cooler's are cheaper and in some ways better - but are usually an air to oil cooler. THey are not "heat exchangers". A thermo helps but isnt a cure.
Since the OEM cooler MAY be a "plate" type cooler (as opposed to a tube/fin) its nigh on impossible to "clean out" hence the engine reman "warranty" issue.
Do it right, or do it over... (its your $)

yea I hear ya I want to do it right...waiting for my email back from the dealer on the price...don't think any coolant is introduced to the cooler..
just heard from the dealer..new toyota oil cooler is $415.00..looking for alternatives or experiences from anyone else who has installed remanuf. engines..and new oil coolers..

If the OEM cooler is not a heat exchagner (kinda odd IMHO - OEM ususally does it as a heat exchanger) then you ought to run a thermostadt on it - thats usually another $100 or so for the stat, mounting peice etc... most of those are usually AN threaded... so noe the price of oil lines has jumped (AN stuff is GREAT tho - if its assembled right it NEVER leaks)

I installed B&M universal type cooler, I just found the size core that would fit in the limited space I have in front of the A/C exchanger and zip tied it in place.
I used an adapter that sandwiches between the block and the oil filter, it has a simple theremostat in it already. Made up some aeroquip hoses at work but a good quality rubber hose and worm clamps will work fine too.
Didn't cost me more than a couple hundred CDN. So far it hasn't given me any problems.
Your set up may be different, but those oil filter adapter types are pretty much universal, just find your right size.
