Hello all,my name is Rocky I'm 22. I'm new here but not to forums in general. I own a 1988 Toyota Pickup 2x4 and I have been slowly restoring it over the past few years. Now I know People will think why restore a 2x4 rather than a 4x4. Well, my dad was the original owner who bought it off the lot the same year I was born and he gave it to me as a High School graduation gift 5 years ago. It has about 170K miles on it give or take. I've got a lot of memories in this truck so its got a lot of sentimental value. just a little bit of my history with cars I have owned two Acura/Honda Integras. I put a lot of work into both but it was time to move on. Here are a couple of pictures.







Well on to the Yota, It has no Power steering and No A/C. I just moved to Las Vegas and this is my first summer here so these things are essential. I've already done the Power steering install it sucks that i don't have pictures but oh well The A/C Install is next...

Now for the exterior I chose Chevy Championship White. I did the body work and my dad did the spraying its still not done but it will be soon hopefully. Here are pictures of the Truck finally lol.

Could you give some more info about your power steering install? Did you just find another 2wd with it and swap it in or did you piece it together?

I'm from California originally. The Power steering was pretty easy i just found a couple of toyota's at a wrecking yard got the parts needed and installed them works great.

did u use to orginal exhaust manifold or go to a header? i need some pics of all the emision tubes or water tubes or whatever they hell they are and how they go together if possible, mines 4x4 but i dont think it would be different

i believe the only thing different is the pitman arm on the gear box...4x4 is bigger ill get pics up later

that style was sold on some 2wd trucks

I love it, paint looks really great! My first truck was a white '86 Toyota with grey interior just like that. And that's a big part of the reason I have a white '88 4runner now.

I say lose the bumper and slam it (static drop) on some Porsche Alloys--but that's just me!

Ah, my father's 88 2wd from PA came with the American style.

I had a truck same year, color and rims but your truck is a lot nicer.Keep up the good work.

Now for the Power Steering it was pretty simple to install since P/S and A/C where dealer options there are no major things to be modded just a couple of holes to drill here and there.

The list of parts needed for non-P/S to P/s are as follows: P/S Pump, P/S pump bracket, P/s fluid reservoir, all P/S lines, P/s Gear box and pitman arm, Idler pulley and bracket, P/s belt, and the P/s pulley that mounts to the crank shaft pulley with 4 (12mm) bolts, and the metal P/s fluid cooler line, and i think that's it. here are some pictures.

Anyone know anything about toyota rear ends? I'm pretty sure i have a 7.5 rear end on this truck since it was the most common for this year and i was planing on doin an LSD/gear job on it but if there is a rear end out there that has LSD stock maybe the 4x4, 8 inch rear end idk...it would be nice is someone can enlighten me b/c i cant find much on rear ends anywhere just numbers nothing about LSD. reason why i ask is b'/c i plan on doin a desert truck build and i dont want top be in the dunes with a peg leg.

not fully sur but i think ive read tht some people are using LSD out of supra's and putting them in their axle. not fully sur though.
only thing i could say is type LSD in the yotatech search

Supra LSDs are popular upgrades from what I've read, dunno anything about what to look for to get one.

Another option would be to find a 2wd with an 8" rear. Considering you are gonna do the dunes, you're probably gonna do jumps, which would make this a worthwhile upgrade anyways. You should be able to find one under a 4spd 2wd, but I think there were other 2wds that got 'em too (1ton?), look for axle codes that start with G, which means 8", axle codes that start with F mean 7.5".

i've looked into the supra lsd but its kinda hard to find a turboed supra in a wrecking yard and the price on ebay for the lsd is pretty much the same price for an after market lsd which would be much less work and less of a head ache.
about the 8 inch rear i might have that alrdy given that my truck is a 4 spd ill have to check.

well i have confired that my rear end is the 8 inch with axle code G662

What size tyre are you gonna run? Whatever it is, those 3.071 gears will just have to go. The cheapest way will probably be to get a used diff out of a 4wd with a locker already installed.

Also, what's your luck like finding non-turbo supras in the junkyards? If you are planning on a 5spd swap try to find a W58 out of a non-turbo 6cyl (iirc it's the 6cyl) supra instead of the W55 5spd in a 2wd pickup if you can.

i was thinking of running 4.10 gears on some 31 inch tires i've read that there is a diff that came in the 4runner with 4.10 gear ratio. non-turbo supras are a bit more easy to come by in the yards i go to so ill have to look into that on the half off days thanks for the info again
