You do have a tool made up to hold the crank so you can re-torque the bolt properly? If not, there are several easy to make designs around here.

okay, so i got the outlet4usa timing belt kit that I ordered from ebay today...

^^mmmm.... I bet it will work fine but it's not OEM.... different lookin' belt and the tensioner does seem odd with that green paint...
Does the TB have marks on it? The toyota OEM ones have nice easy tic marks to line up the cams and crank, my others (non-toyota) did not. huge YES on the crankbolt! hahaha- 215 ft/lbs or so for the 3.4, the new one also comes with loctite on it (red hi strength for the 3.4, blue medium for the 3vz). Mine cost me $6.02 plus tax, ask me how I know that still! haha I bought the spanner tool to hold the balancer for $65, but it looks pretty easy to make your own; I don't have a welder yet and just wanted to get it done but all you need is something solid with two strong pins/bolts spaced correctly. the spanner tool nubs are only like 1/2" if that, don't need very long pins. use blocks and/or tubular webbing against the frame to isolate the CS pulley/balancer and TORQUE AWAY!!! Stick it in your crank and pull the wrench until it goes click.... |
Go to your local auto parts, and ask them to pull a few of those parts off the back shelf for you to look at. You will be shocked how many of the items they pull out that have "Made in China" on the box or item stamped. It is hard to find made in Japan or USA without paying through the nose at the dealer for it!

the t-stat is the correct tempurature also btw... 82c = 180F, exactly what is called for per FSM/dealership computer.
sorry if I'm just stating the obvious. IF they will take it all back I would highly recommend Toyota OEM parts, the timing belt can be had for $40 and the T-stat is only about $26; biggest expense will be the WP, totally worth it for Toyota/Aisin quality IMO. not sure what the idlers would go for. I got most of the parts for mine from toyotapartscheap.com and the crankbolt/t-stat from the dealership parts counter. good luck, I hope you can get a hold of these jokers soon; keep us posted! |

I finally got ahold of them and they told me that they never said they sold oem parts...that the list was only there for reference, ha ha. it is so decieving if you go the ad on ebay...it really does look like they are selling oem parts. they are taking the kit back and said they would pay shipping too...so all good. I ordered the idlers off of partsgeek, along with the "mbl" timing belt (it said it was oem) I'm going to the dealer for the crank bolt, tensioner, and drive belts and t stat broke the crank bolt with my homemade tool today...will post pics |

The link below is probably the easiest metal crank holding tool to make up (see post #14). It works great holding both the crank and cam. I used a 4' piece of metal and hacked off 1' to make up the short leg.

It broke the bolt loose just fine. I then had to use a puller to get the pulley loose, but wasnt hard.... |

I've already got the water pump, both idler pulleys and timing belt coming from partsgeek...and now I'm running up against the clock as we have a trip up to our land in western nc next week planned with vaca days off and everything. so I'm just going to go into the dealer to get the thermostat, drive belts, tensioner tomorrow. I will however, save the link as my buddy with his 96 tacoma will be doing his soon.... I just wish I had asked some of these questions on here a couple of weeks ago before buying anything. Lesson learned. but I'm not too worried if I spend a few extra bucks here and there, as this stuff should last me 10 yrs. thx again...to everybody on here...seriously:camp: |

At your mileage, you may want to consider cam and crank seals. Some say leave 'em alone until they leak, others say change 'em since you are already there.

I see the cam seals add's a bit of complexity as you need to remove the cam gear...which makes me a little uneasy. I need to put a light up and look closely to see if they are seeping any... |
