c0ugar69's 1989 4Runner Build-Up Thread

I purchased this 4runner a couple of weeks ago, the engine was knocking but i figured i could rebuild it if I need to. it has the 22re with a 5speed 4wd trans. This is my first Toyota. I think when its fixed up a bit it will be a nice truck. I bought this because my son is in the Scouts and I am involved and figure it will be a great vehicle to go camping and not worry about scratching it.

When I got it it was running just real bed and the clutch was slipping real bad too. I did some research on here, read most of bleeders engine build and liked what I saw so I am doing one also. This 4runner will go to my son when he is able to drive (Legally). Here is the Engine on the stand, The front seal basically fell out of it.

here is the 4runner after getting the engine out, gona need some major cleaning. Thinking of taking tranny out to clean it also. What do you guys think?? is there seals on the tranny that leak and could be replaced easily now?

Here is the engine apart, The timing setup looked as if it had been changed recently, the cover looks new as well as the oil pump. The crank bearings are not spun. but they were worn down a bit. The pistons look good. I am planning on having it bored out. what is the best size to bore too? also what size to grind the crank too 10, 20 I figure I will make it like new. I am buying the engine builder kit with the crawler cam.

Got all the engine parts cleaned up. My dad put a grind on the flywheel and it looks pretty good. the parts look alot better all cleaned up. I am putting all this on here at once because I just thought to do this yesterday before i tore the block down. I am almost up to today.

Ok here we are today, Went and got some engine paint. Son and I decided to go red with black. I havent decided if I want to paint the intake red or leave it stock. whats everyone thoughts on that? My son and I painted all the brackets and oil pan tonight. Probably wont do too much for a little bit as I have to order the rebuild kit and send the block off to get it machined.

Found the center journal for the cam is worn, not sure what caused this. Anyone know what could have caused this, the oil hole is clear. maybe a warped head. I strait edged the bottom and its pretty good. maybe it was surfaced but the top didnt get checked. anyone know of a way to fix this besides getting another head??:welder:

c0ugar69 03-24-2010 06:44 PM

ok, got some time today to do some work. I ordered my rebuild kit from engine bulders with an RV cam. Hope its good. but I decided to take apart the altenator today so here we go

sorry the picture is so huge, I am still trying to figure this out, but you can really see how bad it was. next I took out all the screws to remove the brushes and the diode.
http://img682.imageshack.us/img682/8233/imgp3012u.jpg
this is the back without the diodes and brushes. next I took aprt the halves by removing the nuts from around the case, there are four of them
http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/95/imgp3013.jpg
as you can see it was full of oil from the bad front seal.
http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/9803/imgp3014.jpg
here is the other half. Next I took it and cleaned all the parts with degreaser and got them ready for some painting.
http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/6979/imgp3015v.jpg
http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/196/imgp3016m.jpg
here are the parts all cleaned and ready for some paint.
I used duplicolor engine enamel paint for this job.
My son wants it to be red and black to match the engine.
http://img709.imageshack.us/img709/696/imgp3018l.jpg
We painted the case red, and then put it back together
http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/3131/imgp3020.jpg
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/4812/imgp3021.jpg
Here it is all back together, nice and clean ready for install.
I will probably take it to the local parts store to get it tested before install. it was working before i took it off so should be good. thats all for today. next will be the starter.:yotarock:

c0ugar69 03-24-2010 08:16 PM

ok I think i finally got the pictures figured out, hope everyone likes what they see here, I think its comin along good so far. lots of nice rigs on here to get ideas from.:safari:

c0ugar69 03-25-2010 07:02 PM

Went to the local kragens today and had the altinator tested and well, it Failed. :pissed: well i guess now I will have to get the 130a alt to replace it.:wrench:

c0ugar69 03-28-2010 08:57 PM

Did some work on the starter, not sure is I will use it but it was fun to just take it aprt and clean and rebuild it.
http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/355/imgp3023d.jpg
Here is the starter before I started
http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/5700/imgp3024.jpg

next remove the wire to the motor
http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/2278/imgp3026.jpg
Here is inside the back of the selenoid part, the copper is pretty pitted and needs to be cleaned before going back together.

Mountain Cop 03-28-2010 09:21 PM

First of all- Welcome to YT! I am not too far away from you, in Coarsegold. Good luck with the truck. Looks like you are getting a lot done. Look into Grant for the alternator. I think I have the link in my build thread (link in my sig). I got a 130 from them and am very pleased so far.

For what its worth- MC

c0ugar69 03-28-2010 09:38 PM

thanks for the welcome, you are really close, Thanks for the link for the alternator, do you know the best place to get clutch kit and a new slave cylinder?? I wont be doing alot of hard core 4x4 stuff, mostly DD with it maybe pulling the bass boat on occasion. not sure if i need the heavy duty clutch or not. any help is greatly appriciated. thanks

malteserunner 03-28-2010 09:57 PM

Marlin Crawler is right down the street from you, in Fresno. They have awesome HD clutch kits. As far as slave cylinders go, I'd get a Genuine Toyota part. There are plenty of Toyota part vendors on the net that have decent pricing, or bite the bullet and go to Michael Toyota or Bingham Toyota. You can get aftermarket slave cylinders cheap at all the local parts stores too, just don't expect them to last like the Toyota parts do.

Welcome to YT, and best of luck with your project. Your work looks great so far.:D

c0ugar69 03-29-2010 05:12 PM

thanks , I think I am going to go with the oem clutch for now, its 80$ cheaper than the marlin kit and i dont have the extra money right now. I took the block and crank in to the machine shop today. gona be 266 for the cleaning, boring, install freeze plugs, put pistons on the rods, and grind the crank. does that sound like a good price? it was the cheapest I found around here. Well gonna go take the head apart and clean it put some now stem seals. I will take some pics and put them on later.

welcome to YT! We love the photo-packed DIY guides of cool stuff like you're doing (at least I do!). Keep it up!

c0ugar69 03-29-2010 08:22 PM

thats cool, I am glad someone likes it cause it sure is alot of work taking pics and uploading, but i figure someone else did the same so i can have a reference so i can contribute also. Here is the cylinder head before cleaning.
http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/9495/imgp3051.jpg
http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/9909/imgp3052.jpg
first thing I did was to remove the valves and springs with a spring compression tool. Put each set in a ziploc and labeled where they went.
http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/4622/imgp3053.jpg
http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/531/imgp3054.jpg
http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/1711/imgp3055.jpg
So once i had all the valves out it was time to clean, I used brake clean and a wire brush to get most of the grime off, I just want to clean it up a bit, not going for a showroom shine here.
http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/1552/imgp3061.jpg
http://img176.imageshack.us/img176/9365/imgp3056.jpg
So now I need to get some valve lapping compound to lap in the valves then its time to put it all back together.
Here is a picture of the valve cover that I painted yesterday. I am still going to paint the letters black. also gotta start ordering parts, clutch, slave cylinder, radiator hoses, also need a crank pulley or I may put a sleeve over the shaft as mine has a groove in it. welp I hope after all this it runns great. any one on here that can tell if this is the performance head, to me it looks like it but I am not sure.

Philbert 03-30-2010 06:34 AM

Uh oh - looks like only one of the photos posted in that last post....do you use photobucket or this site to host photos? I recommend photobucket, then using the "direct link" URL for each photo when posting here using the photo tool.

c0ugar69 03-30-2010 04:02 PM

I see all the photos. I am using image shck to host the photos. maybe they werent all loaded yet. thanks

Philbert 03-30-2010 04:39 PM

Strange....I see some of your photos from above in the post but most are red "X"'s....anyone else see that or am I crazy?

I'm on cable internet so I don't think it's my bandwidth :)

broncrider 03-30-2010 04:47 PM

very nice man. that doesnt sound like to bad of a price at the machine shop. like all the pictures that your putting up

c0ugar69 03-30-2010 08:53 PM

thanks, I think I am gona get the exhaust manifold surfaced also and that will be about 30.00 to get that done. just bought my clutch kit and radiator hoses today. On some of the other post i see the same white box with red x in the center also, maybe its something to do with the browser settings?? not sure.

c0ugar69 04-01-2010 07:54 PM

Ok its been a day or 2 but I will start off with the valves, I lapped all the valves in.http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/1014/imgp3081.jpg
this is one of the valves, nice dull area is where it was lapped. after that i installed the new oil seals that came with the engine set.
http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/1/imgp3078.jpg
http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/4743/imgp3079.jpg
I used a 11mm socket to seat the seals on the stem guides.
Next I cleaned the injectors. they were pretty dirty.
http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/6687/imgp3065g.jpg
here is a before shot. pretty bad, cant even tell what it is hardly.
http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/5630/imgp3066.jpg
here it is all cleaned up and looking pretty. I also put new gaskets on each one.
http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/4828/imgp3067i.jpg
here is the gasket set for the injectors, was about $5 each

c0ugar69 04-01-2010 08:11 PM

finished the valve cover.
http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/6804/imgp3082j.jpg
Hand painted the letters with black engine paint. I think it looks pretty dang good!:rockin:.
My block and crank were done today so i went and picked them up. it was cheaper than I thought. 288.00 for everything with the manifold surfaced and they took out a bolt that was broke off in the manifold.
http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/3772/imgp3068.jpg
Got the block prepped and painted. looks good I think.
http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/4527/imgp3069.jpg
Now that I got it all painted I loaded everything up in my dads truck to take over to his house so I can start assembly.
http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/6892/imgp3083.jpg
http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/7121/imgp3077.jpg
heres my new pistons on the rods, shop mounted them.
http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/6947/imgp3076.jpg
Manifold with a fresh surface. new clutch under it.
http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/9093/imgp3071.jpg
New seal in my tranny front cover for the input shaft. Figured better do this while its out.
http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/9830/imgp3074x.jpg
Clutch pressure plate. its an aisin.

c0ugar69 04-01-2010 08:24 PM

Now the building begins!!!!
http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/4196/imgp3084p.jpg
Put in the new main bearings. these are 10 under, had the crank ground.
http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/7/imgp3085h.jpg
Set the crank in and then put the caps on and torque them to spec.
http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/9219/imgp3086.jpg
Next I put on the oil retainer cover on the back of the engine block, I wont put the seal on till later because I need to get a sleeve for the crank, it has a groove in it:bang:.
http://img704.imageshack.us/img704/8006/imgp3087y.jpg
Next I put the block on the stand so I can put the pistons in next.
http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/723/imgp3088j.jpg
I put the rings on the pistons and lined them up according to the chiltons manual. there was no mark on the compression rings so i put the writing up.
http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/4232/imgp3089.jpg
Theres my daughter supervising me, she says hurry up so we can go home.:con:
http://img176.imageshack.us/img176/4742/imgp3090.jpg
Here it is with the pistons in, now I can start on the timing chian tommorrow. that is all for now. I am hoping to get this done by saturday.:domo2: we shall see!!

Philbert 04-01-2010 08:48 PM

c0ugar69 04-04-2010 06:27 AM

Thanks. Just a quick update I will put some more pics up later, got alot to do today for easter. but ITS RUNNING:domo2:and it sounded good too. I only ran it for a minute because it was dark and no light where its parked at my dads place. He is going to warm it up today and do another valve adjustment on it hot then it should be good to go. It was an awsome feeling to hear it run so good after all that work.:rockin:

Ranger Moore 04-04-2010 07:01 AM

Nice!

c0ugar69 04-04-2010 06:39 PM

alright here are some more pics and details as promised.http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/5388/imgp3092v.jpg
Here I have the timing cover and gears on, still dont have the oil pump on yet. put in the new metal timing guide:great:
http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/3493/imgp3094.jpg
Got the head on and lined up on the dowel pins, I did have to take it off becasue i forgot to put some sealant where the timing cover meets the block, luckly i didnt bolt it down yet so an easy fix.
http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/363/imgp3095.jpg
Here is the new 268crawler cam installed and lubed up.
http://img243.imageshack.us/img243/4650/imgp3096.jpg
Here is the new head bolt set I picked up at Napa, only 19.00 so i figured what the heck, I was missing one bolt anyways.:con:

http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/5456/imgp3098j.jpg
Here I have the rocker arms on, and I torqued the head down to 65lbs since i read about some people having leaks when only torqued to 58lbs. hope it doesnt leak.

Heres a shot from the side, water pipes painted black.

Here I have the Exhaust Manifold on and the water pump what do you think, it matches.
http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/2341/imgp3105.jpg
Here I have the new rear seal in, I had to put a sleeve on the crank since it had a groove in it. Hope it holds up.
http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/519/imgp3108.jpg
Got the intake on and put the wireing harness on while i was at it.
http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/4532/imgp3109.jpg
Here is the new throwout bearing on the tranny ready to mate to the engine.
http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/9036/imgp3110l.jpg
here is the new clutch on and bolted up, now time to move it into the engine bay.
http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/8749/imgp3112e.jpg
Here it is in its new home, and time to put on all the rest of the stuff, power steering, a/c, and all the good stuff. Put new drive belts on, http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/4221/imgp3111.jpg
This is the last pic I have of the engine, it got late and i wanted to get er done. I did finally get it to where I could start it and it sounded like a cat purring, it was so awsome to hear it finally after all that work. Today my dad warmed it up and adjusted the valves again, it does Have a couple of of the small water hoses leaking so I will probably go to the dealer and get some of the special hoses. A/C clutch is broken so i need to look for one. I think the compressor is froze up so i didnt put the belt on for the a/c. Tommorrow I am hoping to have it home so I can give my dad back his truck.
http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/2598/imgp3122.jpg
Here is what I was busy doing today, had the family over and had a Egg hunt.

c0ugar69 04-04-2010 07:22 PM

:rockin::rockin:http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/6537/imgp3104.jpg
Almost forgot, I painted the rims with some duplicolor paint its a dark silver and I painted the center caps Black. What a difference it makes in the overall look of the runner. Now that the engines done I need to dave some more money and start cleaning up the interior. also for those who just have to know, I totaled all my exspences up and it came out to $1300.00 and thats with everything, paint and all. not too bad for a complete rebuild, a long block cost that much so i guess I did ok.:rockin: I will keep this updated as I get more pics and do more to the truck.

PismoJoe 04-04-2010 07:41 PM

I know you've already heard it, but great work man!!

I don't think I've ever seen anyone put that much detail into painting a starter and alternator but it definitely looks great!

c0ugar69 04-04-2010 08:17 PM

thanks, It sucked i couldnt use the alternator, it tested bad so i went and got a lifetime one from autozone. but the starter works great, the guy at autozone said i cant paint it or it will void the warranty:readit:. ohh well. if it goes bad later i might end up gettin the high output one, but for now it will do.

Philbert 04-04-2010 08:41 PM

Again - amazing work....so glad I can now see all the photos :)

Throw an LCE header on there for the complete package.....
