Well I have had a couple of crazy days..We got the valves adjusted and got everything put back on the engine. went to time it and it would not go past 0 degrees to the 5, we moved the distributor and nothing, worse, I started thinking maybe I had it a tooth off on the lower gear. :pop: I decided to wait till the next day to figure it out this was on monday. so that night i got on YotaTech and did a search and I found some others with the same issue and found out there was supposed to be a washer behind the distro gear between the cam gear, wth, I guess when the guys i bought it from had it apart they didnt put it in, went to the local junk yard and found the washer, installed it and walaa I luv Yota Tech, If I hadnt found that on here i would probably have still been trying to figure it out:domo2: Here is a shot of the engine in place all good to go.
http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/4761/imgp3124.jpg
I am going to drive it around for a bit Before I go get her smogged. It has been frunning good, I have about 50 miles on her as of tonight. still need to do alot to her. I cleaned up the interior a bit and put some seat covers on, looks a whole lot better. need to get a new bumper and brackets, anyone have one that they took off to put on aftermarket bumper. also want to get some nicer wheels and tires later down the road. I will get some more shots of the inside later and put them on here. thanks for the encouragement from everyone.

Z's Confederate Toy 04-07-2010 09:11 PM

Looking good, glad to see that its running again. I'm liking the orange theme.

ohyeahcrx 04-08-2010 04:50 PM

I like how you make it sound so simple taking the engine out and putting it back in. For me it was a B! hahaha

c0ugar69 04-08-2010 07:29 PM

it actually wasnt all that bad, I have done worse like a honda civic, I think it was harder because the mounts and there is less room in the engine bay. Great news....PASSED SMOG today. now I can officially get all my dmv papers in order. The only other thing is the clutch it grabbing way at the top, not sure if its an adjustment issue or not. the only high numbers were on the NO readings, thinking maybe the cat is bad or going bad. what do you guys think??

ohyeahcrx 04-09-2010 10:44 AM

Haha its quiet the opposite for me. Hondas can do those all day. So simple compared to these. Atleast I think so haha.

c0ugar69 04-09-2010 01:28 PM

Yea maybe it was just that it was 100 degrees out when I did the honda, I didnt even rebuild that one, just put a used japanese engine in it, and had to swap everything over to the used engine from the old one, plus put new timing belt and all the other stuff on the front. it sucked but i got it done. I cant figure anything out on the clutch yet, its not grabbing till way at the top, the clutch is new, flywheel has been surfaced, does anyone know what the step down measurement is on the flywheel??

c0ugar69 04-09-2010 09:45 PM

Did a little more work on the runner, trying to get her all cleaned up, it is very dirty, I have been using a green scrub pad with some rubbing compound to get the grime off, its actually working quite well, just hurts my arm and shoulder because it takes lots of elbow grease.
http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/8173/imgp3130.jpg
I only managed to get the door and front fender done today and my arm is killing me:saw:

http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/3023/imgp3126.jpg
Here is a couple of interior shots, new seat covers i put on yesterday, and cleaned up everything. I need to get a stereo in here.
http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/7161/imgp3125.jpg
here is another shot of the door, can you tell the difference??:rockin:

crawlerjunkie 04-09-2010 10:03 PM

Very nice work, but why would you go to a Star wars forum for advice on a Toyota:bump:

[quote=c0ugar69;51414691] Got on YodaTech and did a search

c0ugar69 04-09-2010 10:17 PM

you got me, i better edit that its late!! ya thats it!!!

c0ugar69 04-12-2010 09:36 PM

havent had time to do much work to the runner lately. I did go get some new brake pads and shoes and hope to do the brakes in the next couple of days. may get new rotors too since they are only around 21 each, probably cost that much to get them turned!! also still having issues with the clutch. it is engaging way at the top, i dont like the way it feels when i am driving it, i think i may end up getting a new flywheel.

c0ugar69 04-14-2010 08:59 PM

Toda I decided to do the brakes since they were a little worn and I want peace of mind. ActuallyI started yesterday but found my calipers were leaking and couldnt get replacements till this morning, I put the new rotors on yesterday.
http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/3482/imgp3138.jpg
here is the new rotor installed read to put the new calipers and pads on.
http://img718.imageshack.us/img718/6286/imgp3131.jpg
Here is the new caliper, pads and lube, I use copper anit-sieze on all the metal to metal contact points on the pads and calipers to prevent sqeeky brakes.
http://img63.imageshack.us/img63/7856/imgp3133.jpg
http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/8003/imgp3135.jpg
http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/2061/imgp3136.jpg
here is one ready with the pads loaded.
http://img682.imageshack.us/img682/397/imgp3141.jpg
installed and ready for bleeding, but first time to put new shoes in the rear and change out leaky wheel cylinders.
http://img594.imageshack.us/img594/2853/imgp3148.jpg
Here is the before shot, it was pretty dirty and full of brake dust.
http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/5887/imgp3144c.jpg
Cleaned and lube added to contact points.
http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/1503/imgp3149i.jpg
After shot, all the new parts installed.http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/6584/imgp3151.jpg
Well there it is. I then proceeded to bleed the lines, I had my son help with this. I think there is still some air in the lines cause it still goes to far down, will have to bleed them again tommorrow. I am spending way too much on this truck, but i guess it should last a long time. I hope:con:

c0ugar69 04-22-2010 08:07 PM

Well there has been a lot going on lately, My clutch master cylinder went out on tuesday I barely made it home, Got that replaced. I got my a/c working. My compressor was locked up so i went to a foriegn salvage yard and they had one and wanted 75$ for it but after they pulled it and brought it to the counter it looked like the coil was burnt so he said if I still wanted it i could have it for 10$ because this is what he gets for the cores. I said sure figuring i could use my coil. Well I get it off and find that what looked like burnt clutch coil was actually just some of the belt had gotten stuck in the clutch when it came apart i guess:rockin: So i took it home and cleaned it
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/1131/imgp3247c.jpg
Here is the coil after I cleaned it.
http://img532.imageshack.us/img532/7322/imgp3249.jpg
Got the pulley on and then put the clutch plate on
http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/7146/imgp3246.jpg
I put it back in the runner and then i couldnt get the fill line connected so i went down to pepboys and picked up a 90 deg. adapter to get it pointed to where i could get to it. This worked and it is now operational. I think it may be leaking so i will add some dye to it next time and a friend has the light and glasses to look for the leak. but anyways the money i saved on the compressor went to a new clutch master cylinder:bang:.

PismoJoe 04-22-2010 08:13 PM

Score! I wish my ac compressor in my 4runner worked lol

c0ugar69 04-22-2010 08:23 PM

Today i got the great Idea of building a back bumper. I has some steel laying around that i got from some equipment at work when they shipped it, Ive had it for a while so decided maybe i could use it.
http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/1324/imgp3254x.jpg
So i pulled out the welder and the plasma and went to work, first i mad the part that will go across the back. took my measurements and did my cutting.
http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/3580/imgp3255d.jpg
http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/5945/imgp3257s.jpg
http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/9825/imgp3256.jpg
here is my plasma cutter and behind it is my miller challenger 172 welder. both work pretty good.
http://img121.imageshack.us/img121/6365/imgp3258a.jpg
http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/411/imgp3262.jpg
Here it is with the sides on. I will probably add some tubing up the side a little bit like some of the ones are that you can buy. but this will work for now.:domo2:
http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/4050/imgp3264r.jpg
http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/8243/imgp3271a.jpg
http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/6365/imgp3268.jpg
Well there it is complete, it was getting dark. I attachet it to the reciever so it is removable with the tow bar. not bad for 30$ that was for a piece of ange to brace the sides with and the paint. so what do you guys think.:fork:

B4Runner 04-22-2010 08:47 PM

Toyota is never a bad choice.
Lookin' good!

PismoJoe 04-22-2010 08:51 PM

x2! :rockin:

LIVES4CRAWLIN91 04-25-2010 10:35 AM

nice motor build...
nice build in general welcome to the toyota family :BIG GROUP HUG: lol jk . you may have to spend money now, but i look at it like this how many car companies have a one million mile club? exactly lol. gotta love them def subscribing

c0ugar69 04-26-2010 06:13 PM

thanks, I have learned alot already from this site. My next investment is some tires, I am thinking of getting some 30x9.5x15 since i have stock gearing and ride hight. either that or the 31x10.5x15 not sure yet as i dont have the funds yet but I am hoping to soon. what do you guys think is better for a stock ride??

LIVES4CRAWLIN91 04-26-2010 06:31 PM

what gearing. 4.10s and id go with the 31s itll fill the wheel well nicely and that one inch wont make that big of a difference.

c0ugar69 04-26-2010 06:59 PM

ya i hhave stock gearing, 4:10s so 31s is the way to go, I am trying to sell my ford 9inch taction lock diff to get money for tires.

c0ugar69 04-30-2010 10:14 PM

Well its been another crazy week, I was driving some kids home and the gas gauge was on E and the runner started kickin and bucking and died right in front of there house:pop:.
So i figured out of gas, I havent had it long so dont know if the gauge is acurate. get some fuel and start it up. it starts but is still running crappy. WTF now what. I have spent enough on this truck already. did some research on my favorite place..Yotatech:rockin: even my kid says dang dad you sure are on that web site alot... so i found some info pointing to the egr valve. well i took it off and it was stuck open from all the carbon in there. I cleaned it out and it closes better but still leaking by so i did another trick from here and cut a soda can and blocked it at the intake, idle is smooth as can be, should also improve my gas milage as i was getting pretty crappy milage before. so before smog in a couple of years i will need a new egr and a cat but not worried about it for now. next i need to fix a leak on the a/c compressor. does anyone know if the a/c is supposed to kick off during idle or what, I cant find a idle up for the a/c, and what is the adjustable valve for that has vacumm to the power steering?? anyways i just need to get some tires and that will be it for now.

PismoJoe 05-01-2010 07:59 AM

The A/C should actually cause the idle to kick up when you are stopped. Heres a pic from 4crawler of the idle up adjustment screw http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTri...x/p1020658.jpg

c0ugar69 05-04-2010 08:14 PM

thats what I thought was the idle up but it doesnt seem to be working i guess, maybe the little valve isnt working. i cant find mention of the idleup in the fsm. I will check it out later, my dang compressor that i got for 10bucks is leaking from the front, I can push down a little on the clutch plate and hear it come out pretty good.. sucks bad cause a new compressor is big bucks and i spent my money on some treadwrights which will be here on thurdays, will get pics when i get them on. also I am cleaning up the back and putting a small sub woofer in for a little fuller sound, will be adding those pics soon also, just dont have the time right now.

LIVES4CRAWLIN91 05-05-2010 04:51 PM

sounds like a 270 a/c is in the mix.... lol two windows down 70 mph... thats my a/c and i have come to live with it ...

c0ugar69 05-06-2010 08:41 PM

guess what showed up today!!!!:banger:
http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/8895/imgp3354.jpg
http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/3619/imgp3352d.jpg
cant wait to get these bad boys on saturday. my brother has a tire machine and balancer at his house so will be paying him a visit!!!:rockin:

c0ugar69 05-06-2010 08:58 PM

another thing, I mentioned that i was working in the rear of the runner so here are the pics.
http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/8285/imgp3336k.jpg
had to take off the side panels and the roll bar
http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/9364/imgp3335x.jpg
http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/8249/imgp3334.jpg
http://img532.imageshack.us/img532/8330/imgp3347.jpg
Here is a pic after i sprayed paint remover on the floor in the rear to try to get that carpet glue off.
http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/5506/imgp3349q.jpg
http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/9015/imgp3341n.jpg
Next i cut out side panels from 3/8 particle board.
http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/2329/imgp3344.jpg
One side done with the sub cut out and a vent hole. I am putting a sub that i had for my hometheater system a long time ago, i took it out and it is 4ohms so it should be good with the car amp that i ordered to power just the sub.
http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/6807/imgp3345.jpg
Here is a picture of the sub that I am using, it sounded good in the house, hopefully it will sound good in the runner. next I have to seal off the sub, kinda make it a box so i put a divider in and foamed it to seal it off.
http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/9175/imgp3342.jpg
http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/7281/imgp3351q.jpg
next I bedlinered the floor, then I put the roll bar back in and the tie downs that were in. that roll bar took a while to figure out how to get it out, putting it in wasnt so bad.
http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/2622/imgp3359f.jpg
http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/6822/imgp3357u.jpg
http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/8973/imgp3360i.jpg
there are a couple of pictures of the finished panels with the speakers. I installed some 5x7 speakers for the rear. I should recieve my amp next week so i can get that installed.it will be mounting on the panel also.:domo2:

c0ugar69 05-08-2010 05:38 PM

:rockin:Wooo Hooo I got my tires mounted today and what a difference it makes in the looks, went and had it aligned today too. drives smooth. I think that the steering box is loose it has play in the output shaft. Is there a way to tighten that up??:domo2:

SUBCRIBED AS WELL! Man, that was VERY entertaining, Cougar! I really admire all the work you've done, and I'm in the process of getting a motor done, right now, so some of your pics are going to help me with the couple parts I had to rip off real quick when my neighbor came over with the hoist! lol.

How's the clutch working out? Figure that out? Also, I LIKE THOSE TIRES! Never seen them before, ......Old Mich's, eh? What made you decide against the BFG's? Just curious, not biased. haha.

Really great thread, Cougar, ....nice to meet you, and welcome to YotaTech! It's a GREAT site, eh?

Chef

c0ugar69 05-09-2010 06:17 AM

Weel actually the tires are Treadwight retreads and they are made with the mitch carcass. I think they use bfg abd goodyear carcasses also but that is what they sent me. I think that you can specify bfg if you want those sidewalls. as far a the clutch it is still grabbing way at the top. it has a new clutch kit, slave cylinder and a master cylinder so I am thinking its the flywheel. I may just get a new flywheel and drop the tranny to put it in and try it.

Swimmerboy2112 05-09-2010 06:25 AM

This truck is an inspiration to me, great work!!

c0ugar69 05-09-2010 08:08 AM

thanks, I figured out the steering problem I think. I tightened the freeplay adjustment and it feels tighter. I will let you know after I take it for a drive today to see how it feels.

ChefYota4x4 05-09-2010 08:36 AM

Right on, Cougar. Hope that steering-fix works. On the clutch, did you say you had the flywheel turned when you did the rebuild? I can't remember, ...and I'm running out the door. Maybe you can just have it resurfaced, instead of buying a new one?

Fresno, eh? I'm a few hours south of ya...maybe I'll see you up in the North American Fork when I camp up there, lol.

Great project, Cougar, keep it up!

PismoJoe 05-09-2010 08:49 AM

I think he got a new one...

I wouldn't recommend getting your flywheel resurfaced, just get a new one for $60 like cougar was saying

ChefYota4x4 05-09-2010 12:57 PM

I hear ya, Pismo.....that is, unless you get it from LCE or something, hahahaha.

Anyway, I really like the tires look, and it seems REALLY deep on the tread...Likey:D

Anxiously awaiting to see what you do next, Cougar! BTW; Are you going to carpet the bed to go with the walls? LOVE that idea on the speakers,...only thing is, I find that without SERIOUS boom, I can't hear anything past the back-seat area too well....Guess I need an amp as well, eh? lol. You got me thinking, though...I'ma have to do something like that on the rear panels!

LIVES4CRAWLIN91 05-09-2010 05:30 PM

Amazing idea with the sidepanels Cougar... I used sheetmetal.. which its long gone with the old trashed bed of mine, but everything u do is clean and only increasing the value of this truck... but u better hold on too it, looks like ur getting to the point of too much soul into it and u'd be like us not urself if u parted ways lol. but ya i like the retreads, ive been considering some my dick cepeks are gettin kinda old

c0ugar69 05-09-2010 08:39 PM

first off I did resurface the flywheel at athe shop where my dad used to work.(Hes retired since then). I think that is the cause of my clutch grabbing at the top. maybe the step was to small. it was about 20 thousands. I think i will just buy a new flywheel and maybe a MC clutch kit so I dont have to worry about it again for a while.

I dont plan to carpet the rear floor. I coated it with bed liner that I had and it already had a rubber mat that i put back on the floor. I love the looks or the retreads and the ride is smooth, just a little hum when driving. I havent had off road tires before but I hear that is to be normal. Even with the new speakers I have to turn it up too hear it becasue of the road noise, but it is much better. not sure what i will do next, I may get an alarm for it and new door locks. I like it so far and dont have plans on getting rid of it.

ChefYota4x4 05-09-2010 09:10 PM

Like I said, 'So far, so good!' Can't wait to see what you do next...'taking notes', lol.

Take care, Cougar,

Mark

paynemw 05-14-2010 11:38 AM

badass dude, i want a 1st gen to play with now, damn i love 4runners

LIVES4CRAWLIN91 05-15-2010 02:14 PM

4runner = epidemy of toyota... especially 1st gens

ChefYota4x4 05-15-2010 04:19 PM

How's it going, Cougar? Any new pics or progress report?
