Hello, I am new to this forum, i decided to join since there are a lot of Toyota's in my family.

Anyways i replaced two alternator belts on my dad's 1994 Land cruiser, and after a week some teeth on the belts were breaking off, that and belt looked like it was walking off the pully a bit. They were supposed to be good belts from O'reily's but rather than try to warranty them, i would rather have the original Toyota-Mitsubishi belts.

I was just curious if anyone knows a good place to get replacements online, i was thinking of getting from the dealer but unfortunately they are closed today and i am thinking they might be overpriced.

Thanks

Quality costs.

The are many Toyota dealers online that sell for much less than walk-in. Two are listed in my sig line.

Try rockauto.com or www.partstrain.com I buy from both places and ive never had any problems with any of the parts that ive bought from either place.

I've never had any problems with either Gates or Goodyear on many different models of Cruisers. Verify that your pulleys are aligned properly and that you don't have a pulley locking up. This will cause heat and make the rubber either burn, or glaze and chunk apart.

My personal preference is Gates. I have done hundreds of timing belts on various models of vehicles. And countless accessory belts. Never had a Gates fail.

I swear by Gates belts as well. Running Gates in all of my cars and never had any problems. Cheaper than OEM and available at your local auto supply store.

It seems a little odd to me that brand new belts, even if there poor quality would break off teeth that quickly and the other walk off the pulley. Sounds like it could be the wrong belts.

Go to iH8mud.com and sign up there as a forum user. Mud is a Land Cruiser forum. Contact either Beno or CDan for discounted Toyota parts. They both work at American Toyota of Albuquerque, parts department, and give big discounts to Mud members/Cruiser owners.

Thanks for the responses. Yeah, i will take a look at the pulleys on Thursday, maybe i knackered something when i replaced the alternator. That and the cruiser has about 345,000 miles, almost all parts and the build is original may be worn bearings in the pulley?

I just don't think a worn bearing on the pulley is going walk off a belt or break teeth on it, unless a pulley is wobbling. Maybe alternator is cocked somehow or belts to thick for pulley groove or possible wrong routing of belts.

Wow, so i am an idiot lol, my dad got new belts before i could order them online (which cost him $57 from dealer), so as i was about to install them i looked at the routing of the one belt still intact for a few minutes and realized it was on wrong. I had put the back side of the belt onto the idler pulley. anyways i am sure those gates belts would have lasted a lot longer had i routed them right.

well that would definitely be a problem, hehe. dunno about an 80-series, but most Toyotas have a sticker under the hood with a belt and vacuum diagram.

Beno is no longer working at American Toyota, well not at the dealership anymore. He was promoted to the general manager of Profits Landcruisers, which American Toyota purchased a few years ago. Pretty sweet gig, if you ask me.

So Crusier Dan is back to being the main man for getting OEM toyota parts cheap. If your a Ih8mud.com member, you usually get about a 25% discount and free shipping.
