22r vs. 22re

Whats the diffrence between the 22R and the 22 RE motors?

One is electronic fuel injection, one uses a carburetor.

4banginRunner 01-11-2009 02:44 PM

same motor, carb/efi

22R = Carb
22RE = EFI, more power, more reliability

siloped 01-11-2009 02:45 PM

wich one is wich?

siloped 01-11-2009 02:46 PM

I don't know man, EFI has more things that can go wrong, wiring and all. EFI has more power and better efficiency.

Both have the pros and cons, for me, carbs never wanted to start in the cold, and stalling out on steep hills offroad isn't fun either.

I have a firend that had an 84 pu and he says it was a 22r with mechanical fuel injection. How does this sound?

4banginRunner 01-11-2009 02:57 PM

EFI started in 85

84 would be 22R carb , mechanical fuel pump maybe?

siloped 01-11-2009 03:18 PM

HUH. anyways, you guys are ALOT quicker with the responces that the guys on the diesel forums. I am glad to be tryin to trade my Jeep for a Yota!:rockin:
And you guys got awsome smilies

I like efi better. I always had problems with carbs.

Edit: They are both good engines. And they both will last 400k miles+ if you take care of them.

AP4CHE 01-11-2009 03:54 PM

I like the carb for simplicity but I haven't seen my truck run since it got really cold here.

my4runner 01-12-2009 01:41 PM

22R is carburetor and uses a manual fuel pump
22RE is fuel injected, uses four injectors...
The wiring is different on both:
I used my intake, exaust, off my 22RE (88 model) and put it on the block of the 22R (87 model)

The EFI can be more finicky with the vacuum leaks and wiring and whatnot. I'd still rather have EFI than carb, tho. :)

darksoldier313 01-12-2009 02:07 PM

efi all the way better economy more reliable and 9 times out of 10 more powerful and the 22res have different ignition systems too

siloped 01-12-2009 02:24 PM

What about a 22RE turbo motor? Was there ever one offered?

darksoldier313 01-12-2009 02:28 PM

ive seen a couple customized with a turbo but have yet to c one stock on a 22re but that doesnt mean they dont exist

toyota4x4907 01-12-2009 02:39 PM

Yes, they made a 22re turbo. They are pretty rare, but there are quite a few members here with them.

siloped 01-12-2009 02:40 PM

I got a guy that say's he has a Yota he says is a turbo motor he wants to trade for my Jeep and I was just woundeerin if it was factory.
