don't mind my hand on the slider, rig wasn't moving also all cell pics

painted my truck with rustolem semi gloss black in a rattle can, painted cage in it also. The truck was orange and already had cage so I didn't bother painting them separate colors..... plus it's easy to touch up

man every looks like they are professional painters on here!!!! i have been thinking about repainting mine but i am just gonna go take it down all kinds of trails so my buddy the other day said i should rhino line the truck but do a really good job and i was thinking very seriously about it and then i don't have to worry about trail rash! just wondering has any one done this yet or what does everyone think?

This thread has teased me ever since I found it when I joined almost 2 years ago. Now that the bulk of the mechanical stuff is built the way I want it, I am considering painting my rig. It should be stated that this is not a daily driver. but rather a weekend Toy. Desert pinstriping is a way of life 4-wheeling in AZ so I do not want to spend a lot of money.

I have sprayed a van and a bunch of fiberglass bodywork in the past with decent results. I have the air compressor and can borrow the spray equipment. That said, I kind of want to rattle can it. This is because I can do a field fix if ever needed :)

While I'm not a shiner, I don't want it to look all bubba :hillbill: either. If I could spray the rattle can evenly I would try it, but the home jobs I have seen in person have sucked....like 3VZ sucked.

My 4Runner is silver with the original paint and stripes. There is minor surface rust coloring on the roof and that's it. The paint is just flaking off and totally burnt having a life in Arizona.

My three options as I see them are:
1. Solid olive drab from a rattle can
2. Silver from my equipment
3. Silver from a Maaco type cheap place

In all three cases, I am doing the same amount of prep work. The nice thing about the silver is that the door jams, underneath the hood, etc. will not have to be sprayed, and I am anal enough that the color mismatch in those areas would bug me.

Has anyone actually spent a reasonable amount of time prepping the paint then rattle can'd their truck? How long did it last? My likely choice right now is #2, but I'm not sure.

Any painters out there that know how long it takes for paint (all versions) to fully dry/cure? In other words, how long would it have to sit before branches can drag along side the body? :)

Any input would be appreciated.

Here's what it looks like now:

My dad has been painting all of his cars for as long as I can remember. None are Toyotas, however...

His '72 Nova has had 3 different engines and has been painted 3 times since he's had it (about 20+ years), all three times it was yellow, once with black stripes. This time it is 1990 Corvette Championship Yellow.

Nova circa 1992

In 1997 (when I was 4), he built the '68 Chevy with a '73 frame, converting it from 2 to 4wd. Pardon my awful cellphone pic, circa 2007. I'm not sure of the color name or manufacturer.

About 4 years ago, one of my dads co-workers was moving and couldn't take his 280z with him, so he got it for free. The paint is a custom mix that someone ordered but never picked up so he got it for about 1/3 of the cost. This car has since been sold 1/1/12.

Krylan Camo paint and some stencils with a flat clear coat.

angrybob 02-01-2012 07:45 AM

How has Krylon, or any rattle can paint held up over time?

paintthetown 02-01-2012 08:21 AM

Krylon has held up super for me. It all depends on your prep work. Painting is the easy part, its the prep that's a killer. Sand down any rust. Then I use red oxide primer over the rust. 2 coats. Lightly sand those spots again. Spray 2 coats Krylon, 1st coat spray back and forth 2nd up and down. Then, if you want , you can spray 2 coats clear. I have a flat clear on my camo Runner. Not going to win any awards but if something happens its easy to fix. BTW, that was the long version of: Yes, it will last. Wish I remembered how to post the pic that's on my avatar.

mcgunn74 02-01-2012 03:30 PM

Im painting mine this spring and was looking at Dura-bak. Its like rhino liner, line-x, but you can spray it SMOOTH!

Sandbox 02-01-2012 04:22 PM

I recently self-painted my 88 truck with rustoleum's automotive primer and professional high-performance enamel in semi-gloss black and did some parts in rustoleum spray on bedliner. Don't want to repost everything but here's a pic of the final product, lots more in my build-up thread.
